Lei-lei / Hsien-ko

A cosplay that i've been wanting to do for years! But just never got around doing it. ^^;; I actually have no clue why. I started this cosplay a year ago, but i couldn't get things to look just right. So i kept on changing things until i was satisfied enough to wear it.

Worn on:
- Atsusacon 2012 (Belgium) - Sunday
- Japan Expo Belgium 2012 - Saturday

========= CREATION =========

Me and my hats. The list of characters i cosplay with no hat or specific hair ornament is growing small. ^^ Anyways this hat was made quite fast, even though i made it a tad too big. :s The hat is made out of half a polystyrene sphere, crafting foam, a teddybears foot (lol) and some REALLY old paper. Most Hsien-ko cosplayers use fabric or yellow paper for the ward-paper on her hat, but i wanted a real paper look. It took me a while to find paper that looked like parchment without actually using real parchment. I ended up having a lovely friend (Toto) who found a 20 year old notebook in some attic, with the perfect paper.

Of course i made the tiger claws to go with my cosplay, but i wanted to have at least one other accessory to prance around with. Hsien-ko has loads of weapons; swords of all kinds, throwing weapons of more kinds, chained items, etc ... In the end my decision came down to 3 possible weapons: the gong, the bomb or the chained heavy weight. For now i made the chained heavy weight with the angry expression. I might make other accessories, when going to different cons.

The gigantic tiger claws, which are Hsien-ko's main weapons. ^^ And the most fun looking ones. I always wanted to do this cosplay because of those fun looking claws. I made both claws out of 6 yoga mats and some geometry that had been long forgotten. *laughs* A wooden handle is attached to them, to easily handle the claws. I actually made 2 sets of claws. One set was made throuhgout the months when i made the entire cosplay. I still love these most, but in the end, i had to admit to myself that i made them too big. They were "life-size" but they only nearly fit into a car's trunk (if we put the backseats down) and navigating through crowds with them would be terribly hard. So it was decided to make new ones that are about one quarter smaller. I'm less fond of these, since they had to be made in less then a week's time. It kind of shows these are a rushjob, but i'll see in the futur what i'll do with them.

The actual character wears 2 shirts on top of eachother. The base part is a purple shirt with giant sleeves (although it's debatable that the purple pants and shirt are just one poofy bodysuit she wears). On top of the purple shirt should sit an asian fighting shirt (don't know the exact official names sorry). But i figured this cosplay would already be very warm to wear, so i combined it to look like 2 shirts, but actually just be one.
The sleeves weigh almost more then the actual claws do. This is because of the materials i used to make the sleeves stand nice and firm. The purple sleeves exists of 2 layers of purple satin fabric, one layer of stiff fabric and one layer of vlieseline. The golden rims on the sleeves exist of 2 layers of gold satin fabric, one layer of stiff fabric, one layer of vlieselin and one layer of pvc (sky) tablecloath fabric.

have fun ~~
