Children's Day

Hetalia: Axis Powers

Last Updated: 04-04-2012

Liechtenstein was actually the first character from Hetalia I wanted to cosplay, but when I found myself getting into the Hetalia fandom and seeing cosplayers I realized I didn't just want to do her red dress because of how plain it seemed (though pretty). I've always loved rustic looking clothing and seeing her Children's Day outfit just kind of cemented that I would do it. I felt like a princess while I was wearing this all day! Even with the bajillion pound apron.

I decided that I didn't like the way Himaruya's design for the shirt had a turtle neck and thought that it seemed very impractical, but I saw another cosplayer's version using a traditional dirndl common in the Swiss Alps, and I looked up pictures of women in Folk dress in Liechtenstein.

I realized that the square neckline fit in well, and I happened to find a wonderful shirt with that neckline at Good Will and cut off the sleeves and added the lace around the edges.

I made the vest (which is lined) and used the straight "eyes" from a hook and eye set that I sewed on to hold the lacing on the vest. The edges are finished with bias tape in a SLIGHTLY lighter brown than the vest (because that's just what they had... I think it looks nice though)

The skirt was... a challenge to say the least. It was a huge pain. Because I'm really small even the smallest pattern size was a circus tent so instead of the original three paneled skirt I ended up going with only having two panels. It's made out of linen (which wrinkles a lot but hey, nobody is perfect, not even animes XD)

The apron is actually really REALLY heavy because, like the skirt, I miscalculated the length and ended up folding most of it at the top, making it heavier than it already was. It was made with (if I remember) four layers of muslin, which helps it keep a shape... almost TOO well. The ribbon is just plain gold ribbon and I drew the design on with black sharpie (incorrectly in most places actually... which I'll have to redo at some point) and then I triple-stitched it onto the apron to make sure it wouldn't come undone from the weight.

Shoes were bought at Target and are also my Sealand shoes. Also OWWWW wearing those without socks is hell and owwwwwwww TAT My poor heels still have the scars!

Wig was actually borrowed because my wig got terribly lost/I don't even know that day at the con. But I had a lovely friend with a lovely wig that made a beautiful replacement.
