Mary Poppins was my absolute favorite movie when I was a kid and recently I was rewatching the movie and remembering how much I loved the costumes and the realization that I could potentially actually do justice to one of them hit me like a truck. And so my ambitious Mary Poppins project began.
This costume tested so many of my skills along the way, from patterning to precision sewing to millinery to leatherworking. (I think I finally have french seams down to the point where I don't have to redo them five times.) Almost everything on the costume is made from scratch. The biggest things I did NOT do were the embroidery, building the actual parasol, and cobbling the shoes (although considerable alteration went into both the shoes and parasol). I did, however, pattern and build the dress, corset, hat, spats, and petticoat.
