Blood Red Dress

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

I cheated a little with this costume by not making the blue velvet dress. The reason for this is that I found a gorgeous faux vevlvet dress in exactly the right length, style and colour. Why create a base dress when this one was so perfect? Not to mention inexpensive: this was a charity shop find.
The sleeves are tight in the arm scye: this is what happens if you are careless when sewing non-stretch material to stretch. But it still looks pretty, so I can put up with it.

How to FAKE paisley:

I cannot find any paisley fabric for the neck and sleeves, nor any of the trim, so I'm hand painting everything. It isn't that hard: you look at reference pictures to get a general idea of the law, then fudge it as best as you can with acrylics, markers and fabric paints. THe easiest to do is probably the paisley. You paint little swirls and paisley shapes with gold paint, and when they dry, add details to them with a sepia marker. I love that my art supplies can lend themselves to sewing and crafts so readily.
I also altered the colour of the red cotton I'm using for the neck trim and upper sleeves by using watered down gold fabric paint and stiplling it on. It makes the fabric look much better and less plain.
