Ah, Sengoku Basara. I had been interested in it for a long time but for some reason hadn't watched the anime.. until one of my friends got me to finally watch it. Heck, I had even bought a Sengoku Basara Wii game before watching the anime. Oh well, I'm a sucker for anything samurai and historical (even though Basara is pretty over-the-top xD) so of course I ended up liking the show, Masamune and Hanbei being my two favorite characters.
I wanted to do Masamune's armor version for next year.. but I also wanted to cosplay from Basara already this year because a cosplay group had been planned for Animecon and my friend Lailaith (who got me watching the show) was going to cosplay Matsu in the group. So yeah, because of my lack of time to make practically anything myself I needed something very simple... kimono!Masamune seemed like a good choice. It's the casual clothing he's wearing in the anime when not in battle and stuff.
White kimono is commissioned by my friend Hasakitsuki's mom and the inner gi is from Kendoshop. The hakama are my kendo hakama. Eyepatch made by me.
I debuted this costume at Animecon IX in Finland, held 14-15th June 2012. Very comfortable costume to wear, not too hot but not too cold for a summer con. Only slightly annoying thing was the eyepatch. I did get used to it very quickly so no big deal, but I had to go repair it once because the Jesus tape (duct tape) that held the patch itself on the elastic got loose. I think I'll wear this more sometime in the future, whenever I need a chill easy-to-move-in costume that doesn't take long time to put on either ~
In 2013 I rewore this cosplay to Närcon and this time I used blue vintage hakama instead of my kendo hakama; it looked much better in my opinion. I will from now on always wear the vintage hakama with this cosplay.
I have cosplayed Masamune Date at:
2012 • Animecon in Kuopio, Finland.
2013 • Närcon in Linköping, Sweden.
