I come from many years in theatre, so when I started reading comics more frequently, Zatanna is a character that caught my eye as being interesting. She and Constantine very quickly took over as my favourite DC couple and characters, so I insisted to my boyfriend that we should cosplay them.
I decided to go with her design from the New 52 because I fell in love with Justice League Dark and the amazing artwork in it. I liked the idea of having a cosplay that was still recognizable as this really iconic cool character, but still be something I could wear around public areas without getting the cut-eye from cranky middle-aged ladies around Toronto.
The jeans and jacket were all lucky finds at local clothing stores. I spent a while deliberating whether I wanted to use leather or denim in the design, and denim won because it's a more accessible material and ended up being more forgiving with the stupidly humid and hot summer weather. The top I made by basing a pattern off of a fitted tube top and sewing on the details like the lace across the neckline and the corset ribbon and grommets up the front.
Also, here is my advice to other socially awkward people who cosplay from comics: if you're able, contact the artists and show them your work if you cosplay their designs. It's a great exercise in getting over shyness and learning how to handle positive attention without turning into a flailing ball of awkwardness.
Jeff Lemire and Mikel Janin (the writer and artist for JL Dark, respectively) seem to really like our John and Zee cosplays, which I consider a pretty badass reward in a way.
