Stargate SG-1

The dress: This pattern is New Look 6557. I created a mottled turquoise and silver lining, then overlayed a sparkly, sheer turquoise fabric. I added turquoise ribbon trim.

The Stargate: The gray is a bottom weight fabric. The circumference is 150 inches. The first black line is 4 inches in and the second black line is 4 inches beyond that. There is batting under the outer edge to give it a little lift.

The gate symbols are silver-painted craft foam cut from 3"x3" squares. The symbols were hand-drawn based on internet pictures of the symbols.

The chevrons are a mixture of orange and gray fabric. Batting gives the chevrons depth. They are placed relatively equidistant (though fudged so as not to cover the symbols when possible). The silver stripes are painted on the orange fabric.

The frame is a hand-crafted hoop skirt. (It had to be dismantled to fit into a suitcase.) There are four hoops involved, measuring in at circumferences of 75", 93", and two at 150". The distance between channels is approximately 22", 10.25", 9", and 5", but they're fudged to get everything to lay right on my body. The frame was created first and the rest of the gate measurements were pinned around that. I plan to make the skirt a few inches shorter for the next wear. I had on shorts underneath because I had to heft the skirt over my shoulder in escalators and elevators.

Accessories: I used glitter makeup on my face and arms. I had LED barrettes in my hair. I used battery operated poster-lites which were wrapped around my body. They lighting effects worked better indoors and were more or less wasted in the parade sunlight.
