Digimon S1

Last Updated: 12-07-2012

My friend ShamanRenji asked me if i was interested to join her Pokemon group for F.A.C.T.S 2012. On my so very infinite list of cosplays (which i still want to do some day) I had Mimi from the original S1 series.

I loved the first season of Digimon. I watched it while it aired a long time ago and i favored it above pokemon since there was less repetition in it. Mimi really was a pain in the butt during half the season, but it was nice to see her grow. She had to be cosplayed by me once anyways. Big hat... Ya know?

It took me a while to decide which material i would use to make this hat. The shape wouldn't be so smooth with chicken wire. Cardboard would not curl like i wanted it to. Other materials wouldn't be sturdy enough. I try to keep everything waterproof so i had to look into more expensive materials and eventually decided to make Mimi's hat out of Wonderflex. I still had a lot of old wonderflex lying around (the one that didn't have a smooth surface yet) and i switched to using worbla for most of my materials so i figured it wasn't being used anymore aka what the heck. ^^
I think i made the top (that fits around my head) a tiny bit too small, but it's still ok since the hat doesn't go over my whole head. Getting the fabric nice and smooth actually took quite some time. I tried glueing the fabric onto the wonderflex. But that was a bad idea, since the superglue only glued the fabric to my fingers in stead of the fabric to the wonderflex. In the end i ended up sewing it all by hand together and stiching it in several parts on the wonderflex as well (which isn't easy task).

I tried to make as much accessories as possible for this cosplay. It's a rather easy costume to make so i wanted to put a lot of effort into the details.

A few days before the convention i was going to wear this costume on, i realized that i wanted to have a digivice and a digicrest. Oh shit! I still had some fimo clay lying around and decided i would just give it a go and try to make both accessories in one evening. Since i kind of rushed these they don't look SUPER great, but acceptable (if you look at them from afar *laughs*).

I tried buying shoes in the shape of Mimi's shoes since little boots like that are sold by the millions. The funny fact is that i found THE perfect shoes (only in black and ones that should be used as house slippers). I tried them on and instantly fell in love with them. Which ment that i wasn't going to use them for cosplay anymore. A few days later i found my old house slippers (which i never wore, because they're not really comfortable) and decided to transform those (with a little bit of craftfoam) into Mimi's shoes.

Lastly i decided to also make Mimi's bag. I tried to measure out a bag that i had and use it as a model to make Mimi's bag. I'm not sure why, but afterwards it came out a bit smaller then i really wanted to. I decided to keep the bag anyways, since i'm not really sure what the real size of Mimi's bag is anyways since every ref picture show a somewhat different size

have fun ~~
