I had an old Seras uniform that I'd gotten from ebay back in the summer of 2009, since my boyfriend wanted Pip and Seras to be our first couples cosplay but at the time, I did not have enough confidence to sew her uniform myself. For Anime North 2012, I decided to take the uniform I had and beat the crap out of it and make it into the Blood-form version of the outfit, as incentive to try sewing my own uniform from scratch in the future. I used a combination of fabric dye, acrylic paint in 3 different shades of red (dark wine-shade, bright fresh red, and a medium brick shade), theatrical fake blood, and food colouring to give the costume the look of being authentically splattered and coated with layers of blood and gore.
I purchased the wig at a local costume store and styled it myself. There's a lot of room for interpretation when it comes to translating Seras' hairstyle, or almost any anime hairstyle, into realism- I decided to use spiky punk hairstyles from the 1970's and 1980's as my basis for inspiration, since I felt it would add to the harsh and crazy look of the costume, and since the art in the Hellsing manga has such a heavy punk-style aesthetic to it. I used Got2B Glued spiking hairspray for styling - seriously, that stuff is a godsent if you're wig styling for anime or video games.
For the shadow arm, I went through a very lengthy creative process. Intially, I wanted to make the very pretty artistic swirly shape that the shadow arm has on the official figurine, but I decided that it didn't match the look I had going for the rest of the costume. Instead, I went with a design that looked more like something that could be used in battle for rippin' up Nazi vampires into ribbons. I built a claw-like armor gauntlet onto a black work glove with craft foam, wire, cardboard, black fabric glue and spray paint. I also made a scaly armor-like cuff to wear along my arm on a black sleeve to continue the motif, and made some jagged 'shadow shapes' which I attached along the sleeve of the uniform top. My design for the shadow arm was inspired by a combination of Sauron's armor from Lord of the Rings, and Lady Gaga's extravagant nail art, particularly from the 'Judas' music video. Because it's not a legit cosplay into you find stealthy ways of working in Gaga-inspired things, I guess?
The Hellsing group with my friends was easily the most fun I had at Anime North this year. :)
