Puella Magi Madoka Magica

Made in about three weeks before the con. The gravity defying ruffles were evil to figure out. >_>

Main dress/coat thing is red twill so I could get the thickness I wanted and a small shine I thought would be appropriate for a magical girl. PEOPLE, WATER RINCE YOUR TWILL WITH SALT BEFORE WORKING WITH IT. OTHERWISE IT'LL START STAINING ANY OTHER FABRIC *coughcoughbiastapecough* ONCE YOU IRON IT OR WEAR IT. I learned that the hard way. >.>
So the top portion was taken from a pattern I already had and then modded for the diamond shape opening, and the bottom portion was obtained with a lot of trial and error, starting with a straight dress and cutting the front opening afterwards. I actually made a different colored draft in cheap coton beforehand! The zipper is located under one of the armholes, so I have to fit my head through it when putting it on. XD

The black top underneath is black twill and made using an altered bustier pattern I had for a previous cosplay. The skirt is thick pink coton, with its pattern something else I already had in my stuff.

The ruffles were sewn after A LOT of trial and error beforehand as I tried to pin them in different ways to get the look I wanted. I think I spent... 4 days? sewing, unsewing, remaking and pining ruffles!

Armbands are made of white stretchable silk and black twill and were simple enough to make, with the buttons being decorative and the patterns completely drafted by me.

Boot covers and pattern were made and drafted by me. They're made of the same twill than the coat, with the stripes being bias tape and the pattern in the front being a thick coton appliqué.

The Soul Gem is resin.

The spear is a wooden dowel and foamboard.
