Evil Queen

The Heart is a Lonely Hunter

Once Upon A Time

Last Updated: 01-03-2013

In October of 2011, this show started airing. I was passingly interested in it but hadn't taken the time to watch it, until I came home from Christmas Break and my parents said, "You're going to love this show and you're going to cosplay the Evil Queen."

My parents know me pretty well.

This bedazzled monstrosity is patterned from scratch, taffeta lined with broadcloth and contrast polysatin (harvested from an old bedspread) with a micro-velvet underskirt (with a lycra waistband and a berry nylon back gore because lycra is comfy and velvet is expensive. In my defense, hiding cheaper fabric on a garment is a completely period practice!).

The collar is cut from the heaviest fusible interfacing I could find and held up with two bones (cut from hardware zipties) running from the top of the collar down into the back of the dress, with white-and-silver polysatin brocade that you can barely see because of all the gemstones.

GEMSTONES. Bought in bulk at Hobby Lobby, sorted over a sixteen-episode Mythbusters binge, and superglued down in a series of main clusters I designed and cut templates for, then filled in the gaps. There are approximately a thousand individual gems on the collar, sleeves, and front trim, and I've still got about a pound of them left over.

Front closes with hooks and eyes (my archnemesis to this day) and tightens in the back with tasseled laces.

This is one of the most fun, ridiculous projects I've ever tackled, and I had an absolute blast.
