So I can't tell you how happy I was to make a Doris costume. I don't have too many pictures of her at the moment, but I will soon.
The approach I took for it was to make a kind of combination dress/bra/blouse. It's held on by an elastic band in the back and clips to hold the shoulders to bra straps. No zippers anywhere and it stays on like a dream! The ruffly sleeves were the most fun to make. I constructed the body of the costume, while accessories were supplied and made by the wearer: a friend of mine.
Dress: Maroon velveteen upper, lined with solid maroon cotton. Trimmed with gold soutache braid at the top. Lower and sleeve ruffles aqua-blue polyester. The fabric has a nice feel and drapes wonderfully.
Accesories: Wristbands and neckband are felt of various colors. Knee-high socks are polyester and hand-dyed (with much trial and error!) light blue.
