Revolutionary Girl Utena
Last Updated: 07-22-2006
This is one of my first costumes, and I wore it on Saturday and Sunday of my first convention. I think it came out well, especially for my first cosplay. My sister cosplayed Anthy with me on Saturday, and it was a lot of fun. Quite a few people asked for our picture, and I'm rather sad that I didn't use a more photogenic pose, but Utena pretty much walks around with her hands in her pockets a lot in the movie and looks confused, so that's mostly what I did. By the end of Saturday, though, my feet were starting to really hurt because of the heels on the shoes, and on Sunday they were KILLING me.
As for the costume itself, we(me and my boyfriend, who actually did most of the sewing) made almost all of the jacket and pants of the white material first, and then added black to the pants, and added a sort of black flap for the front. I didn't have her jacket button up the front like most people because there IS NO SEAM in the movie. There isn't a line there, so I just hand sewed on the buttons down the front. I ordered the wig from a seller that I discovered through ebay, and it is great. I made the hat by buying a police hat from a costume store. I then bought a huge button cover thing and painted it using gold metal tinting, then I carefully used raised fabric paint to paint on an accurate rose seal on the button cover, which I hot glued on the hat. Then I repainted the strap across the bill gold(it was originally black). I was really pleased with the way the hat turned out, although I wished that it was more true to the shape of her hat. For the ring, I bought a plain wide ring from claires, then I used black and pink fabric paint to paint on the rose seal, which I also think turned out great. The problem is that all of the pictures that I have of me so far have me standing with my hands in my pockets, so you can never see the ring >.<. I plan on improving this costume and wearing it again at A-kon next year(including getting better shoes)!
