My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic
Last Updated: 07-16-2014
I wanted a comfy, summer-friendly cosplay, in particular for wearing to Atomic Lollipop which has cosplay-unfriendly things like carnival rides, dances and mid-summer heat, so I decided on Rainbow Dash! I don't actually like her very much (and am also nothing like her, see my Twilight Sparkle cosplay...), so it's an interesting clash of personality.
The costume is:
-Wig: Cactusmafia's Super Bolt Spectrum Flash (bought it at Anime North back in May 2013. Yeah, this cosplay was actually thought up a LONG time ago). Cut a little shorter and cut bangs in, straightened it a bit, gave it a spiky/choppy cut (I seem to have lost my touch with cutting wigs, though, it didn't look like I was hoping for...) and sewed on felt ears like my Twilight Sparkle wig.
Outfit: A close-fitted scoopnecked blue tee with a team jersey-style "Dash 01" painted on it, plus her cutie mark. The wings velcro to it. On my bottom half, thrifted blue jean shorts (and added decorative rainbow stitches on the turnups of the short legs, since my plan of buying cutie-mark patches fell through), a rainbow belt, rainbow socks, my regular sneakers, and I made a rainbow-striped friendship bracelet too. I also won a medal at Futurama trivia at Atomic Lollipop, so I kept it on the next day as it fit nicely with the costume.
Wings: Craft foam and felt covering, attached to my shirt with velcro strips. Makes them easy to remove and unlikely to get damaged by being knocked into. But they're actually very sturdy already; at the base, there's three layers of craft foam and four of felt, all glued together.
Also made a Tank plushie for an accesory and carried him in a blue sports bag, also painted. Also using circle lenses, Vassen Super Pinky Wine Red. The colour wasn't what I hoped for, and holy CRAP they're big. A little too big for me. I was intending to use them for both this and next spring's Kusanagi cosplay, but the colour's not quite right, so sigh, I hate wasting lenses.
Unfortunately, I didn't realize how much the lightweight wings would stretch the fabric out on the cheap shirt, so after the one day of wearing at Atomic Lollipop (second time total), it had to be retired. Fortunately it was a cheap costume out-of-pocket (woohoo, gift cards and buying wigs with my already-budgeted cash at cons) and there's very little wasted (I had to throw out the shirt, but can sell the wig, wear the socks, belt and shorts normally, the shoes were from my normal closet, and I gave away the plushie and bracelet to a friend.)
