Governor Weatherby Swann

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

Yes, Weatherby. Look it up if you don't believe me.

Where to start. I started him about a week before the con, when I had planned to start almost two months beforehand, and as such he wasn't completed as I'd like for ALA. Due to a new promo pic I found showing his coat as silk (or at least something with a similar sheen), I don't feel like embroidering the cottong version. I may remake the coat and pants to be more accurate someday, but I wouldn't count on it.

The outfit was based off the Simplicity Pirates..bean pattern, with changes to closer replicate Weatherby's outfit. The jacket is fully lined (and heavy as hell), with matching pants and vest. The vest fabric was easily the most expensive piece of material I've bought to date (and it felt like such a crime to use the wrong side!), but it's oh so gorgeous. The hat was purchased as a flat-brimmed wool block hat, from which I flattened out the embossed design on the rim and steam-shaped to a lovely tricorn. The trim is actually just GemTac'ed on, since I would have killed my fingers trying to sew through the felt of the hat.

The wigs are a long story. I originally ordered the French Curl from Amphigory, but for some reason they botched my order and cancelled it, leaving me high and dry. I placed the order again in the off-chance it would get to me in time, then went to look elsewhere for a last-minute replacement. I wound up getting the Naomi from CosWorx, which arrived with plenty of time. I actually ordered two of each wig, with plans to double the wefts to create the number of curls I needed, but to my dismay each curl was created out of hair from three wefts, rendering it all but impossible to transplant... at least in the time frame I was looking at. I also couldn't get curly wigs in grey (it's a conspiracy, I tell you!), so I had to get them in platinum blonde instead. The wig was worn blonde at ALA (as dying it in the bathroom was a BAD idea... >__>), but was dyed with a refill-size bottle of Katie Bair's dye in Cloudy Grey in time for Fanime 06. (Note: Dyeing curly wigs is painful but possible. It will take a lot more pigment than you think, and you have to carefully restyle the curls afterward.. but you can barely tell now. XD)

Whew. But the skit from ALA was worth it. The Guvnah caught Elizabeth sneaking out, and upon demanding if she was going to see one of those bothersome pirates, she informed him that she was SO over pirates.. She was going to be a ninja instead! Cue Naruto music, and a headband appearing out of her pocket hoops. It ended with Elizabeth doing a ninja run off the stage, skirt flapping behind her. What can I say, my mind works in wonderfully weird ways. XDXDXD
