After making Boss Borot, I wanted to make another character from the show that made me laugh. Ashura is a villain that's half-man/woman. Literally. I have an artbook image of a shower scene... !!! Ew!
Anyway, the costume was only challenging in the design cause the coat's length is not consistent from one image to the next, even in the anime. So I opted for the shorter variation and did my best to hide the invisible zipper up the front. The whole thing is lined (yet another learning experience with joining fabrics that move differently... *grumbles*) and there's a silly story about the "pants"
They're actually chaps and every edge is lined in silly colored bias tape...
What happened is that I had a small amount of fabric for the pants due to a shortage at the fabric store. So when I sewed the crotch and inseam, I tried it on to check the fit. It was too small, the fabric too thin, and I somehow bent the wrong way. The fabric tore! I ripped my pants!
So without enough remaining fabric to make another pair of pants, I just cut the crotch seam out and widened it to the shape of biker chaps. Since the coat was going to hide it all, didn't matter what color I used, so I went to town with all my wide bias tape.
Neat thing is that using bias tape on the flared bottoms actually worked when I hemmed it up. The tape made the flare stick out stiffly. *grins*
