Sofonisba's Little Sister

Last Updated: 07-02-2007

1560's Elizabethan

My inspiration for this dress was a painting by Sofonisba Anguissola of her sister (and father and brother). I'm not sure exactly of the date, but I know that it was painted in Italy.

I used the Simplicity Shakespeare In Love pattern for the undersleeves and left them unlined. I tried to have as few layers as possible, since I was only going to wear it to Faire. I didn't make a seperate corset, but boned the bodice to make up for it. My dress fabric was cotton brocade in robin's egg blue. The shade is slightly greener than the dress in the painting, but it's by far the closest I could find, and it's really quite pretty. I lined it with a rusty pinkish red cotton, and piped the front edges and collar with a sage green.
