Yuna / Moogle Mog

Mascot Dressphere

Final Fantasy Series

Don't touch my pompom Kupo~!

Why did I make it? Because at the time I was worried I wouldn't finish my Red Whirlwind (Romeo x Juliet) costume in time, which I didn't. So I needed a back up costume which is this, a moogle! More specifically Yuna in her Mascot dressphere, that or Lulu's little moogle, Mog. They're irresistibly cute and I had never made a mascot before so I decided to give it a try.

I used roughly 4m of cotton and it was made in four different sections. The torso, arms, legs and finally the head. I first made the torso which was strangely enough, stuffed with a cushion to achieve the pouch shape - you would've never guessed haha! I then attached the arms and legs on.

At the very end of the legs where the feet go are ballet slippers because they're easy to take on and off and I've stuffed the tip with stuffing so that it's more plushie-like??

The arms have slits in them for my hands which are sealed with velcro so that I can easily free my hands if I need to grab something. Finally the paws have felt sewn on.

The head was (poorly) constructed with a chicken wire base with a wire helmet thing as the base (I don't know what the heck it was but it worked!) so that it would stay on my head easier. It was painful shaping the chicken wire, very painful - but it was the most effective method. I then used bubble wrap to cover the surface because I found the fabric to be ever so slightly see through and you could see the wire underneath. Plus with the bubble wrap it was safe to touch! I used extra bubble wrap around the bottom of the head as well so that it rested comfortably on my shoulders. The fabric was then covered over this frame and eye holes were cut out.

Unfortunately for the pompom I couldn't get springy wire to keep it up so it flopped down a lot. At the time I didn't know where to get it so I had to make my own look-alike.

The wings were the cutest part of the costume. It was made from polycotton and stuffing - I sewed the basic shape together and then added extra stuffing in the "bone" parts. Because they're so small I didn't need wire or anything to keep them up, I just sewed them straight onto the suit and it stayed put! I love my wings so much~

This was my first fully hand-made costume actually. And was a great learning point, some parts were poorly constructed and I clearly didn't know what I was doing for a lot of it (especially the head). However I now know what to do to make a successful mascot and I do wish to make another in the future at some point. It was hot and because the feet had no grip I was sliding around everywhere which was fun actually xD I had good friends who guided me when I was too blind to walk through big crowds which was good.
I hope to fix up some parts and rewear this sometime, and hand out balloons to passerbys *shot*
