07-21-08 Finally the red fur is in!

The feox fur came in. Instead of getting red for the top half of the head it is more of a tan color, and dark brown underneath. The fur has got to be around three inches long, very good ply, but it is almost too long. Better too long than too short. Some clipping will occur.

The fur is beautiful. I spent most of my morning doing some finishing touches on my progress before my client came over. Since the head is made out of mesh, I added some padding on the inside, (it is difficult to sow on padding after most of the head is complete, so do so before you began adding foam and the sorts.) so it won't scratch too bad. I was thinking about adding more padding around the bridge of the nose because in order to keep the face straight, I used an empty pen. I will remove it when it is finished and replace it with something more permanent.

So far done, I have the white fur that travels over the bottom half of the face, as well as the black leather lips, the mesh and foam is put together of course. What else? The ears were redone this morning because the client wanted them a bit pointer than they were, which was fine. Again I over compensated on the ear size in the beganing, so fixing it now was no problem.

As a matter of fact, I haven't wasted anything. Very conventional and money saving if I do say so myself.

The (red) fur on the top of the face was laid out, cut, and actually sown to the white fur. So now the front of the face, and the bottom front half is completely covered in fur. I glued down the white parts on the bottom, with the fur running downwards towards the lips, and was suprised that the client wanted the (red) other fur running back upwards to the ears.

This posed a slight problem in my mind because I didn't want a hideous seam to show between the brown fur and the white. and then I remembered sowing.

So it was sown onto the white fur and there was absolutly no seam to be seen.

Great seam tips:
*When cutting any type of fabric, always do so standing up, or if your on the floor, be sure to be leaning over your work and not looking at it from afar.
*Never pull the fabric when you are cutting it
*Always cut fur fabric with the fur side down. Then using sharp fabric scissors and not razor blades, run the bottom blade underneath the actual fur fabric. just cut the base part using little snips, and not the actual fur. This will make sure that the fur dissapears when you sow it together
*when sowing fur brush it away from the seams.
*use a wire brush or a comb to gently hide the seam.
