These days,
more and more cosplayers are seen running around in what normal people would call Halloween costumes. At a recent photoshoot I attended, people kept asking us what it was that we were doing out of pure curiousity, while others would just gawk and make comments like 'Halloween isn't for a while kids'...
We were about 25 people at the shoot and of that there were about kids 4 (elementary/ teen) and the rest would be considered adults (college/uni students/ parents)... this comment was invalid. Anyways it just dawned on me because of the fact that when I first joined Cosplay.com last year and Deviant Art 2 years ago the subject of cosplaying wasn't that popular. In fact, it was just border line being a geek close enough to trekies (no offence).
Now and days you see millions of pictures of cosplayers some good, some in the process and others experimenting in their own creative way. I think it's because the light bulb went off in the minds of adults saying "OMG! I have a job and money and can pay for my own costume, not some pass off I had in the attempt when I was kid". That's the way a lot of people realize because 'Dress up' is fun.
The more I look at it the more it spreads. I can blame myself for some of the people I know who wouldn't even dare think of the word cosplay. I said "WHY NOT?! You watch anime don't you?" and then get the reply "...umm well I don't know" they finally agree to it and then the rest is history.
I've converted about 4 people in the process ...one of them it spread like wild fire and now everyone at my old cegeps anime club is doing it. I kinda feel honored to be the one to bring that cosplaying light into that darkend place we called the bunker for our club.
Its amazing these days how many people we meet around the globe and it's all thanks to Japan for sharing it with the rest of the world.
Ok now to get into the serious talk about this.
The subject cosplaying is just for fun, there are a lot of people out there that take it to the next level for no reason. Those people who judge are usually the ones who don't take part in a masquerade or skit competitions because they rather just sit there say rude things.
I've been to many conventions and sometimes it gets ugly and for what reason? I mean the concept is to have fun not make fun of people. If you do this, well why the hell are you there in the first place and why so serious?(joker reference)
Gawd people try their best to come up with whatever they can. There are sometimes I have to admit where people say they did a half ass job on their costume but its the effort that counts right? Just dust off that halfness and put the finishing touches on it the next and everything will be alright. Don't feel sad about it be glad about your accomplishments. (I feel like a motivational speaker lol)
Hey if first you don't succeed try try again we've been told that a million times by parents, teachers and friends and they are right goo work does pay off. If people need help with their cosplays there are forums and websites dedicated to that sort of thing from the people who have accomplished their cosplay goal.
To conclude I would like to say, I am very fortunate to have come to know the world of anime and cosplaying. I love it with a passion even though sometimes the path is small and filled with slight costume errors but I try my best because that's what I love doing. I hope you all do too.
