A few days ago, I went into a mild depression. Looking at my finances, it would seem that I wouldn't be able to afford to do my Simon cosplay this year. I had loaned a lot of money to my mother (which hasn't fully be paid back yet), and my father had been robbed and had to delay giving me money that he owed me.I didn't give either of them a hard time about it. They're my parents after all. But this cosplay was the light at the end of a stressful tunnel, and not being able to do it was something that upset me a lot.
I resigned myself to another year of playing Miles Edgeworth and began taking a few small art commissions to try and raise a little money so that I might be able to just get something nice to cheer myself up. Maybe some figures or something. Or maybe, by some miracle, afford the Simon costume. But I wasn't getting my hopes up for that.
My sister-figure, Harli, began advertising for me in a few livejournal communities to help me get some more commissions. She asked for links to the costume and general info that I figured would help people understand what my dilemma was and why I was suddenly begging for work. It all seemed rather normal... Until she began asking for my measurements and shipping information.
Harli swears that it wasn't her, that she was just the middleman to get my information... But someone, anonymously, bought my costume for me. A $200 expense that I could nowhere near afford was given to me, as a gift. Harli said that they did everything through her because if they asked me directly about it, they knew I'd refuse to let them buy it for me (which is true). They don't want anything in return.
I still have a few expenses, yes. But they total barely more than $60, which is completely affordable for me, especially with the commissions I've taken on. I get to do my cosplay, relax and have fun for a few days.
I'm not used to random, spontaneous generosity. It's something that's visited me only once or twice before, and NEVER on this level. I spent the night in tears, floored by the fact that someone was willing to do such an amazingly kind thing for me. Whoever it is, has my eternal gratitude and love.
I'm not some sort of veteran cosplayer. This will be my 4th year. And I'm not really big in the cosplay community. I only know a few people, and only one or two of them are really known at all. Maybe you guys see this sort of thing all the time. I don't. And much less do I have it happen to me. So I thought I'd share in what is maybe the kindest thing that's happened to me as a cosplayer and as a member of the anime/manga fandom.
