My weekend at AMA8

We ended up spending very very little time at the con. We were hours late leaving on Friday because there was a loose horse running around dolst's town while we were there packing up his things. Turns out the poor thing was about 20 and almost blind. He was really agitated and would try to bite at you, but I realized later it was because we were coming at him from his almost completely blind side. Anyway, after a couple of hours someone got in touch with his owners and they came and got him.

So after finally getting into my Hiei costume and getting my hair glued up and painted black with white highlights. we left. We arrived at our hotel close to six, but had planned to get there closer to 3. Anyway, we checked into the hotel easily (even with me in full costume) and after getting dolst into his Kurama costume, we ran over to register for the masquerade on Saturday. I'm glad that we didn't get there any later. We were entry 29 our of a max of 30. We missed opening ceremonies unfortunately and there wasn't much we wanted to do in the evening. We went to the room and got our stuff organized and worked on costumes most of the night. Then we got up and I was hoping to work on costumes (I'm so thankfully that dolst suggested that we bring the sewing machine along) and then hit a couple of afternoon panels and then go back to change into our Inuyasha and Kikyo costumes for the masq.

Well, we ended up skipping one of the events to work on the costumes and script. After cosplay rehearsal we ended up going to have a great lunch with the third member of our group and his friend. Then we got back too late to go get the autographs I wanted, so we continued on the costumes and script. Then we ended up taking almost 2 hours to get pinned into our costumes so I missed the last panel that I really wanted to see. We got back to the convention just in time for line up. It was a long wait and a bit insane, but I think the skit went ok. The judges were yelling back the callbacks, which was funny(we did the Time Warp from the Rocky Horror Picture Show with Inuyasha characters). By the time that ended I was exhausted from being on my feet so much on Friday with the horse and standing a lot Saturday night plus I needed to get back to the room so that I could unpin myself and use the restroom. Unfortunately, I forgot to take pics of us in those costumes. I was a bit depressed by this point(ok, crying like an idiot really). Honestly, not because we didn't win(the winning skits that I had seen in rehearsal were great), but because I had made the poor decision to keep wasting time doing work on the costumes and script instead of going to the panels that I was so excited about. Also, I realized that I was depressed that I had skipped seeing my grandfather a few weekends just before he died because I was working on the costumes. I was wiped out and decided to skip the rave since the main events room was so small and I didn't know if we could get in to it and dolst was passed out asleep almost as soon as we had gotten our showers. To be truthful, I believe that I would have ended up feeling just as bad if we had won. I think I had been so focused on this that I still had completely allowed myself to grieve for Papa.

Today, I felt a bit better and tried to focus on all the hugs, pics and even a couple of compliments on our Hiei and Kurama costumes on Friday. That was a bit reassuring since I did them from scratch almost entirely on my own and I don't have any prior instruction or experience working on such things. It must have been luck that the costumes looked kinda like the characters and didn't fall off of us. I washed out my Hiei hair Saturday night since I didn't want to deal with it when I got home, but I dressed up as Hiei anyway. We got our stuff out of the room and checked out and headed to the con. We checked out the vendors' room, but I didn't find anything that I was looking for there. The cool thing was that we had 3 to 4 different compliments on our skit(I was surprised that people recognized us in different costumes). Oh and a shout out to the girl that looked all over for Hiei merch for us. Then we went to a panel about drawing comics in a manga style that was sorta interesting. Finally, we went to closing ceremonies which had a bigger crowd than normal. That was my first time seeming most of the guests that I wanted to see. Fortunately, that was fun and I got Chuck Huber's autograph afterwards. I just wish that I wasn't so wiped at the time and I could've talked to him more. Anyway, we we hit Lynnhaven mall for food and headed home. Next year, I will not allow myself to miss anything I want to see because of costumes. Hopefully, we can reuse these for a while. I make a wig for Hiei so I can take the hair on and off and I need to make some alterations to Kikyo and Inuyasha to improve their look and wearability. My only other regret is not getting more pictures, I saw some great costumes. I need to get the pics that dolst took this week and share them.

I have focused on a number of negatives, but some of that was due to the small size of the hotel which was not the fault of the con at all since they were forced to move to a smaller location kinda last minute and the rest was me being silly. Overall, It was a nice getaway and fun for me. I'm definitely looking forward to next year. Maybe I can make up for it a bit by going to Nekocon and just reusing those costumes(with some alterations). Now I must rest my feet and get some sleep.

Hiei Costume

May 1, 2008
Well, I'm starting my first from scratch costume project. The character is Hiei from Yu Yu Hakusho. I went out and after looking around a bit, I found the perfect pattern for his physically impossible and always changing cloak/tunic. It needed a few alterations, but that didn't seem too difficult.

So I sat down with the instructions for the pattern. It won't be that hard...

Maybe it's in Latin? This might be a bit tougher than I thought.

I decided to wait until I made my dress form to start on that. So I thought I would start working on Hiei's white neck cover. Meggie decided that she would help me with it.

Honestly, she thought that the white material was a great bed. She's a silly mogwai.

May 5, 2008
Another night working on the costume using my cheapy little camera. Again, I had my great pine scented mogwai to help me. Next to her you see the duct tape dress form with the neck cover on it.

Trying to keep up with the dress form has been challenging. It pops open and loses polyfill sometimes. My assistant is good at hunting down the stuffing and killing it.

OMG, the tomboy girl who never thought she would sew is sewing!

I finished the hemming and now I need to bunch up the material with pins and then sew it so it stays that way. I can visualize this a lot better than I can do it so far, but I'm getting close. Hopefully, I can finalize it tomorrow night. Then I'll be working pm cutting out the pieces for my pattern.

May 6, 2008
I finally cut out my pattern pieces. I'll probably wait to cut the material this weekend when I have access to a nice sewing machine and several people that know how to do it.

Wow, it's really hard to get anything done when I have to unload the dishwasher twice, forward an attachment, clean up all the polyfill from the doggie's toys, give the dogs their heartworm medicine, find somewhere to put the loads of things on the ironing board just to iron my pattern and probably a few more things before I have to clean up everything for the night. I can't wait until I have my own place. I will definitely have a work area just for things like costumes and such. Hopefully, tonight I can finally find my old Caboodle and see about making myself a sewing kit to keep everything organized(at least as much as I can do).

I spent a couple of hours working on the collar for Hiei's outfit.

Last week, I decided that I need to have a separate collar in order for it to look right. I made that last week.

Tonight I put interfacing on it and put velcro on it. I got some of the sewing done to attach it to the other piece of the neck cover.

I'm sewing it in such a way that it should look gathered like Hiei's does in the pictures.

Of course, I needed to include an obligatory picture of my assistant.

Well, today I got the collar piece sewn onto the rest of the neck cover. I think it looks pretty good.

Even if I do say so myself. The collar bit stands up like it should and it appears to gather well enough at the top.

The only thing left to do is the sew it up lower so that it gathers correctly all over and to make sure that the pieces on the shoulder look right.

Of course, my assistant was hanging around to help me. I had her working hard on trying to unstuff a toy.

I even got particularly lucky and had two assistants at one point. My other assistant likes to sit in my lap while I sew. She truly is fearless.

Of course, they were too busy playing together to help me very much I suppose. Meggie does like to hang out and help though.

Tonight, I didn't accomplish quite as much as I had hoped, but everything I did turned out well.
http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/3/...NeckCover1.jpg

At least I had my assistant checking everything over for me. I think we were really making good progress, but time sure gets away.
http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/3/...gieHelping.jpg

First, I got Hiei's neck cover about 90% done. The only thing left is to finish up the sewing on the back of it and touch up the front a little bit around the top and bottom mostly.
http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/3/...NeckCover2.jpg

Sewing around the shoulder on the dress form makes my arms tired since I'm working in the floor. I don't want to lose too much time resting so I found sewing things in my lap when my arms gets tired works well. I finished hemming a simple sash that I am going to use for one of dolst's costumes. And I sewed the elastic onto Hiei's headband.
http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/3/...5/Headband.jpg

I'm really proud of that too. The only Beading Cord Elastic I had here was white so I used a black fabric marker that I had to color it. Then I just found a good way to sew it on and it seems to fit well and I think it'll look great in my black hair. My only concern is that the paint on my bangs might run so I may go ahead and make a second one soon just as a back up.

Oh, and I went ahead and picked up a little sewing box at Walmart. It is helping me keep up with things and I think I am working more efficiently now. I think it is appropriate because it kinda matches the Hiei theme and that was the cosplay I started on first this year.

I don't think I will get a chance to work on Hiei's black tunic thing until the weekend, when I have someone experience around for guidance. Until then I will probably work on another one.

May 15, 2008
This will be my last Hiei costume post for a week or two. My dad has agreed to oversee some parts of making the tunic and I think dolst's mom will help me with the rest since her sewing machine is easier to get to than ours. So I finally managed to finish up his neck cover. After coming back to it a day later, I realize it isn't as perfect as I thought at the time. If I somehow magically get done a little early I can touch it up with sewing, but really I think it looks fine considering that I have no earthly clue what I am doing.
http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/3/...kFinished1.jpg

That is all I can do for Hiei for now.

To Be Continued...???

My assistant (a fellow Hiei fangirl) asks that you keep checking out my journal for updates. How can you say no to that face?
