We ended up spending very very little time at the con. We were hours late leaving on Friday because there was a loose horse running around dolst's town while we were there packing up his things. Turns out the poor thing was about 20 and almost blind. He was really agitated and would try to bite at you, but I realized later it was because we were coming at him from his almost completely blind side. Anyway, after a couple of hours someone got in touch with his owners and they came and got him.
So after finally getting into my Hiei costume and getting my hair glued up and painted black with white highlights. we left. We arrived at our hotel close to six, but had planned to get there closer to 3. Anyway, we checked into the hotel easily (even with me in full costume) and after getting dolst into his Kurama costume, we ran over to register for the masquerade on Saturday. I'm glad that we didn't get there any later. We were entry 29 our of a max of 30. We missed opening ceremonies unfortunately and there wasn't much we wanted to do in the evening. We went to the room and got our stuff organized and worked on costumes most of the night. Then we got up and I was hoping to work on costumes (I'm so thankfully that dolst suggested that we bring the sewing machine along) and then hit a couple of afternoon panels and then go back to change into our Inuyasha and Kikyo costumes for the masq.
Well, we ended up skipping one of the events to work on the costumes and script. After cosplay rehearsal we ended up going to have a great lunch with the third member of our group and his friend. Then we got back too late to go get the autographs I wanted, so we continued on the costumes and script. Then we ended up taking almost 2 hours to get pinned into our costumes so I missed the last panel that I really wanted to see. We got back to the convention just in time for line up. It was a long wait and a bit insane, but I think the skit went ok. The judges were yelling back the callbacks, which was funny(we did the Time Warp from the Rocky Horror Picture Show with Inuyasha characters). By the time that ended I was exhausted from being on my feet so much on Friday with the horse and standing a lot Saturday night plus I needed to get back to the room so that I could unpin myself and use the restroom. Unfortunately, I forgot to take pics of us in those costumes. I was a bit depressed by this point(ok, crying like an idiot really). Honestly, not because we didn't win(the winning skits that I had seen in rehearsal were great), but because I had made the poor decision to keep wasting time doing work on the costumes and script instead of going to the panels that I was so excited about. Also, I realized that I was depressed that I had skipped seeing my grandfather a few weekends just before he died because I was working on the costumes. I was wiped out and decided to skip the rave since the main events room was so small and I didn't know if we could get in to it and dolst was passed out asleep almost as soon as we had gotten our showers. To be truthful, I believe that I would have ended up feeling just as bad if we had won. I think I had been so focused on this that I still had completely allowed myself to grieve for Papa.
Today, I felt a bit better and tried to focus on all the hugs, pics and even a couple of compliments on our Hiei and Kurama costumes on Friday. That was a bit reassuring since I did them from scratch almost entirely on my own and I don't have any prior instruction or experience working on such things. It must have been luck that the costumes looked kinda like the characters and didn't fall off of us. I washed out my Hiei hair Saturday night since I didn't want to deal with it when I got home, but I dressed up as Hiei anyway. We got our stuff out of the room and checked out and headed to the con. We checked out the vendors' room, but I didn't find anything that I was looking for there. The cool thing was that we had 3 to 4 different compliments on our skit(I was surprised that people recognized us in different costumes). Oh and a shout out to the girl that looked all over for Hiei merch for us. Then we went to a panel about drawing comics in a manga style that was sorta interesting. Finally, we went to closing ceremonies which had a bigger crowd than normal. That was my first time seeming most of the guests that I wanted to see. Fortunately, that was fun and I got Chuck Huber's autograph afterwards. I just wish that I wasn't so wiped at the time and I could've talked to him more. Anyway, we we hit Lynnhaven mall for food and headed home. Next year, I will not allow myself to miss anything I want to see because of costumes. Hopefully, we can reuse these for a while. I make a wig for Hiei so I can take the hair on and off and I need to make some alterations to Kikyo and Inuyasha to improve their look and wearability. My only other regret is not getting more pictures, I saw some great costumes. I need to get the pics that dolst took this week and share them.
I have focused on a number of negatives, but some of that was due to the small size of the hotel which was not the fault of the con at all since they were forced to move to a smaller location kinda last minute and the rest was me being silly. Overall, It was a nice getaway and fun for me. I'm definitely looking forward to next year. Maybe I can make up for it a bit by going to Nekocon and just reusing those costumes(with some alterations). Now I must rest my feet and get some sleep.
