What got you into cosplay?
I've always loved sewing and designing, but what really got me into costuming was The Lord of the Rings movies. I absolutely fell in love with the costumes in the movies, and wished I could recreate them. I would spend hours scouring the net for reference images, and came across a few fan sites, and the concept of 'cosplay'. I was so envious of all the American costumers who had the opportunity to attend conventions and wear their costumes.
Finally in 2006, I attended my first Australian convention in costume and was absolutely hooked! I've not looked back since!! There I met some Star Wars costumers who then put me in touch with the Australian Costumers Guild. Through these amazing groups I've finally had a chance to realise my passion for creating costumes, and have decided to make a career out of it.
What was your first costume and why?
I've made/put together costumes for plays and such, but my first real 'costume' was Kaylee's Maidenhead outfit in 2006. There was a group of us attending the convention (my first!) and Summer Glau was attending, so as fans of Firefly we decided to do a group.
I absolutely loved Kaylee's patchwork jacket from the movie, and wanted something a bit different from the usual coveralls. It was so much fun, and Summer absolutely loved it! :D
What is your favorite costume and why?
My favourite costume is definitely Wonder Woman! I have been a Wonder Woman fan for as long as I can remember, so it was a dream come true to finally cosplay as her.
When I first decided to do her costume I searched through lots of different artwork and photos from the tv show, but I eventually settled on the artwork by Terry Dodson. He has a way of drawing females in a beautiful, curvy, feminine way that is also realistic. I loved that he gave Diana back her dignity and princess origins. He managed to keep the iconic costume, but tweak it so that it was still modest.... well as modest as you can get wearing your underwear!
Do you have a dream costume you'd like to make?
The female Templar from Hellgate: London. I fell in love with the Templar from the very first moment I laid my eyes on the previews at a convention in 2006. As soon as I saw it I knew that I had to have the armour!
It's a kick ass set of armour, very sexy, feminine and yet practical! I LOVE it and I love the game too!
I'm going to be starting work on it in the next couple of months, and would love to have it finished by April next year!
What has been your most memorable cosplay experience?
Being able to make dreams come true for people by meeting their favourite characters. Whether it's dressing as Princess Leia and visiting kids in hospital, or meeting fans as Wonder Woman, it's just such an amazing experience! I feel honoured to be able to portray these characters, and I feel so lucky to be able to make others happy. It's one of the best things about cosplaying!
Do you participate in masquerades?
If by Masquerades you mean competition, then no not as yet. I've judged several cosplay competitions, but I have yet to enter. Though I do have plans to enter next year!
