What got you into cosplay?
I've been an anime/ manga/ video game fan for years now, but it was in 2008 that I decided to start cosplaying. I finally discovered conventions in my area (Anime North) and I had been looking through all the cosplay photos here, so I decided to give it a try.
It soon turned from just 'putting on a costume' for a convention into a very important hobby. For me, it's a form of self-expression and personal creativity, imagination, and fantasy. And beyond the personal aspect, I've gained friendships and met so many wonderful people through cosplay. The cosplay community is really inspiring and I'm glad to be a part of it.
What was your first costume and why?
My first cosplay was L from Death Note in 2008. The costume was definitely a good choice for a beginner so most of my effort was put into the wig. My first completely self-made cosplay was Wind Waker Link.
What is your favorite costume and why?
I don't think I could pick a favourite- anything I put 100% effort into I enjoy wearing. Link is really fun to wear due to reactions, especially from non-cosplayers. Any popular character is always amusing. Or more detailed and bulkier costumes like Slicer TK Baka simply because it initiates really interesting conversations.
Do you have a dream costume you'd like to make?
My dream costume is Kusuri Uri from Mononoke. The anime is amazing (and so colourful!).
I've got a few original ideas, and something involving 2 sets of stilts for more complicated time consuming cosplays. And then there's plenty of favourite characters across many mediums and series (always changing!).
Do you participate in masquerades?
Yes! Just one so far, but it's a start. My first walk-on was at Anime North 2011 as a Journeyman.
Have you won any awards for your costumes?
I won Best Workmanship in Show and Best Workmanship Journeyman with my Slicer TK Baka cosplay. I was, and still am, so shocked, but so delighted and proud that my cosplay went over well! :D (Apparently Featherweight liked the domes on my backpack- very flattering to hear that!)
Tell us a little about yourself
I'm currently out of school (was in a science based co-op), working three jobs ), and pursuing creative passions (cosplay mainly). I recently began working at a costume store in my city, and it's definitely the best retail/job experience I've had yet. There's nothing more important than liking your work!
Obviously anime, manga, video games, and other nerdy things play a big role in my life. As well as friends- the people that make my life dynamic, interesting, and awesome. :3
