What got you into cosplay?
I love to act and sew, and cosplaying is that grand avenue for me to take in order to enjoy what I love to do. One day, I would like to act on stage or on screen, which is a huge dream of mine, but I also love to be able to step out of my comfort levels and play around with new worlds and characters. Cosplaying allows me to practice many different sorts of characters, and I am able to craft my abilities to act in different ways. I feel like with cosplay, possibilities are endless, and I can be whoever and whatever I want to be. They are fleeting experiences, and are never permanent, and this is why I love to cosplay. I feel that the best things in life are not permanent.
What was your first costume and why?
It was Uchiha Sasuke. I went through this Naruto phase, but the anime was currently the only thing I really watched on tv anyway. Plus, I needed something to put together in a 6 hour period. It was an epic fail. But hey, we all have to start somewhere. =^.^=
What is your favorite costume and why?
I think my favourite cosplay is now my Battle Elsa. I spent so much time, money, and effort on her and I had learned so many valuable skills. She was a real adventure and journey. I also got to meet so many new people who loved her and came up and talked to me, that I have a lot of positive experiences with her. She makes me feel beautiful. I have a low self esteem sometimes, but when I put on my Elsa makeup and dress, I feel pretty and not too uncomfortable in my skin. It's a really nice feeling and I love that about this costume. I feel GOOD and accomplished. :)
Do you have a dream costume you'd like to make?
My dream cosplays are the Dragoon forms of Shana and Rose, and maybe one day attempt Dart's Legendary Dragoon costume. Ive already started planning these out though, and I hope that the execution works as well in RL as it does in my head. :)
What has been your most memorable cosplay experience?
There was a con that I was at as Elsa, and this little girl came up to me wanting to take a picture with me. She told me that I was her favourite queen and she even sang Let it Go. It was so adorable and she was so happy!!!
Do you participate in masquerades?
What was your best masquerade experience?
Judging. Being able to critique and help other cosplayers is a wonderful opportunity. Having the best seat in the house for a masquerade is also fun. Sometimes I am wary because I know that it is because of the table I sit at that the actors and cosplayers on stage may be worried, but I try to comfort myself in the fact that everyone gets stage fright.
Have you won any awards for your costumes?
I've won four awards in the four contests that I have competed in so far.
*Best Choreography (Archon 37)
*Funniest Skit (Judges choice) Nebkon 2013
*Best Video Game Prop/Armour Replica for Craftmanship (ASTL 2014)
*Best in Show Craftmanship (Archon 38)
Tell us a little about yourself
I graduated with my bachelor's degree in Anthropology from Webster University. Now I am taking my Anthropology to another level by using my research skills to learn more about the cosplay community and controversies and issues in the community. I want to write an ethnography based upon my research and present it to the community. There are so many things in the community that deserve recognition as well as thought to "why is it like this?"
Is there anything else you'd like to add?
Always do your best and be true to yourself. Do not ever let anyone else get you down, because it can be hard to pull yourself back up after a while. Love yourself, love your hobbies and shoot for achieving your goals. :) Life is too short to waste on what others think of you, so enjoy every day as though it is your last.
