What got you into cosplay?
What? It's actually more of a who. My friend Melissa (Suzushichan) told me that Cosplaying was the "Shiz-nit" in the Anime world... really, I didn't know a whole lot of Anime until I met her in (yes, I know it's strange) German Class in my Freshman year of High School. She was the one that introduced me to Comic-Con and what Anime and Cosplay actually was. I hadn't always enjoyed the whole "costume" idea, and I still generally don't (judging by my current costume project), but it's still fun and very innovative to see others dressing up and making the costumes in new and innovative ways.
What was your first costume and why?
My first costume was Child Kokiri or Green Tunic Link from The Legend of Zelda. I did it because it was the easiest costume I could think of, and I was still an amateur at sewing, so it's not really good. My mother helped me create it, as she helped me create most of my cloth costumes, so I had a "semi-pro" help me. The costume is currently retired now, but there's pictures of it in my Gallery.
What is your favorite costume and why?
My current favorite costume is an original Blue Neko (Cat) design of mine. I didn't have anything to wear for Preview Night at Comic-Con 2007, and I hate going to Con underdressed, so I just basically threw it together and I was rather surprised at how much attention I actually got in it. It didn't cost me a thing; I already had all of the pieces and it took me no forethought whatsoever. I got a load of attention at Comic-Con of 2008 as well, and I was quite thrilled.
Do you have a dream costume you'd like to make?
I'm actually currently making one of my dream costumes now. Jazz from The Transformers: Generation One is a costume currently being created. You can check his web page for more information at [HTTP://JAZZCOS.BLOGSPOT.COM/]. My other dream costumes are Blaster, Ironhide, Soundwave, Skywarp and Ratchet (so that if I see a Sunstreaker or Sideaswipe I can chase them with my tools >:]). I'm hoping to have Jazz done by BotCon 2010 at least [whenever that will be], but it will be finished by Comic-Con 2010.
What has been your most memorable cosplay experience?
My most memorable cosplay experience so far has got to be BotCon 2009. Meeting LOTS of my favorite Transformers voice actors was awesome, and meeting my all time favorite artist, Alex Milne, and getting to spend time with him was just the best experience I've ever had at a convention. BotCon itself is an incredibly small-scale convention, so it gives artists, fans, and voice actors alike the chance to get to know the others around them better.
Do you participate in masquerades?
I'm not very good at them, and I've never really won any awards with them, but they're still fun to participate in. I've only been in three so far, but I will be up on stage at Comic-Con 2010 as Jazz.
What was your best masquerade experience?
I've had three masquerade experiences, one at Comic-Con, 2003, one at Con Dor XI 2004 and one at Ani-Magic 2005. My most memorable is CCI where Suzushichan and I did Vash and Dominique and we recreated their battle from the episode "Demon's Eye".
Have you won any awards for your costumes?
I have never won any awards as of yet, but one day I should.
Tell us a little about yourself
As of currently, I'm going to Grossmont Community College in San Diego for my GED, but I hope to patch over to the Art Institutes to study for Media Arts and Animation for Advertisement. I live in a three-bedroom house with six people (all my family) and they all have to work around me and my large costume and props. I -DO- hate my job, but it gets me money and good hours, so I'm not supposed to complain (it's embarrassing to say where I'm working, so I won't). I love to draw as a hobby and I am also an active member of the Fencing community here at our college. I am the Media leader of the Club and I handle all artistic aspects of the Club. It is quite fun, actually.
Is there anything else you'd like to add?
I take commissions for extra money (since I'm going to BotCon and Comic-Con this year) and I sell Scooter t-shirts and jewlery, among normal art commissions. Since I'm also beginning to learn how to use had materials like polystyrene, wonderflex and the like, I'm also open to commissioning costume pops and weaponry as well.
