What got you into cosplay?
Handiwork - I like building things, especially props. I like the complexity involved in recreating something down to the minute details. I particularly appreciate fine craftsmanship.
What was your first costume and why?
While I did have some interesting halloween costumes over the years (Gomez Adams, anyone?) Spike Spiegel from the anime "Cowboy Bebop" would be my first foray into cosplay. I definitely have the hair to pull it off, and I also enjoyed Spike's complex nature as a protagonist. Cowboy Bebop was also the series that got me interested in Anime in general, specifically the episode "Hard Luck Woman."
What is your favorite costume and why?
I did a costume once which was the Cardboard Tube Samurai from the gaming comic Penny Arcade. It was very simple, but very successful as well. The wooden shoes were particularly fun to build, if not to walk in.
Do you have a dream costume you'd like to make?
I'd like another go at making Van Fanel from Escaflowne. I made a giant set of wings a while ago which were unfortunately destroyed. The costume was, admittedly, a last-minute halloween idea but ended up having a lot of potential. Really, I'd like to try building the wings again with articulation and a more simplified harness.
I will soon start work on Chell's gun from the game "Portal" which should prove a difficult and interesting task.
Have you won any awards for your costumes?
I have, for a costume called "Party-Bot 5000" - This was the brainchild of a friend of mine, and a recurring theme during halloweens. The first version, "Party-Bot 1000" was not much more than a metal trashcan with a 2-liter of beer which was fed by a funnel and fed out through a tap in the front. Yes, the person wore the trashcan.
Party-Bot 5000 featured a 12v car battery which ran a CD player, 3 speakers, a squak box complete with microphone and sound FX, as well as several neon and LED lights. Again, an aluminum trash can was used as a chassis. During a local costume contest, the wearer won a $500 cash prize, beating out 5 "Chippendale's Mens Dancers" for first place.
Tell us a little about yourself
I'm currently employed as a Graphic Designer in Atlanta, Ga. In my spare time, I play FFXI as well as rebuild classic cars. I know how to weld, paint (that is, high-gloss show car style painting) run a lathe/mill/any sort of machining equipment, and have a fairly decent workshop where most of this takes place. I graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design in 2004 with a degree in Graphic Design and a minor in Furniture Design.
I'm a casual gamer, not particularly awesome at any games but I think I can hold my own in most. Favorite franchises include Soul Calibur, Gran Turismo, HALO, and Half Life.
