What got you into cosplay?
People I know going to conventions said the main attraction was the convention attendees dressed up in costumes of anime/manga/game characters, while THEMSELVES being in costumes! It gave me the illusion that the great majority of con-goers were cosplayers (which I later discovered weren't), and my strong interest in attending a con for the first time pushed me into finding something to dress up as. Cosplaying then made me believe that I was "more into" or "belonging to" the convention masses.
Otakuthon had as much as 75% of all attendees cosplaying. Cosplay is indeed getting more popular among con-goers, and is the funnest way of fully belonging and participating to a convention!
What was your first costume and why?
The Random Catboy. It was made from different random pieces found in Trixyloupwolf's costume shack. Since I had no clear idea of who to dress up as, I went for a random OC. The other characters in her shack were unknown to me. I didn't want to cosplay a character I didn't know about.
What is your favorite costume and why?
Guan Ping from Dynasty Warriors 6. Though currently a closet cosplay in terms of clothing, the weapon however is entirely scratch-made by myself. I hope my friend will one day finish this costume... After all, Dynasty Warriors cosplayers are some of the most impressive and eye-catching cosplayers at cons, along with Trinity Blood and Final Fantasy. And I'm glad to be among them (or will be!).
I'm organizing a DW cosplay group based in Montreal! We're about 20 cosplayers at the moment, and we're aiming to hit Otakuthon 2010 by force with our outworldly costumes!
Do you have a dream costume you'd like to make?
An angel-like character with large, feathered wings, or some kind of great magic user/caster.
What has been your most memorable cosplay experience?
Walking around as Guan Ping at Fan Expo 09. An artist in the Artists Alley literally fanboyed when he saw me, and took a pic of me without hesitation. More people around me instantly recognized as a Dynasty Warriors character, without naming anyone specific off the top of their heads.
Do you participate in masquerades?
I've never competed in a Masq before, but I really want to join a Journeyman or Artisan in their cosplay group so that me myself I would be propelled to those levels just by being part of that group! ;D I believe my prop-making skills are up to par with most of them. I've already received praise for my Guan Ping's halberd from a well-known and respected prop maker.
Have you won any awards for your costumes?
I never got any award, not even a Hall Costume Award. I've been interviewed once on TV though, for my Catking costume. I'm aiming for AT LEAST a Hall Costume Award for the Dynasty Warriors costumes we'll make.
Tell us a little about yourself
I studied 3D Modeling and Animation and am now looking for work. I used to work at EA Mobile Montreal, in the QA department. I LOVED my job: playing games on cellphones!
Is there anything else you'd like to add?
I'm a cosplay photographer, organizing with other cosplayers/photographers some photoshoots in the Montreal area. I don't have high-end photography equipment, but if you're interested in a public or private photoshoot, you can shoot me a PM/email/Facebook message and we'll make an event/appointment. I can also tutor photographers in making full use of their point & shoots, and advise other photoshoot organizers on planning and preparation. :D
