What got you into cosplay?
I can't remember. I think anime introduced the term "cosplay" to me, but I've always loved costumes and the whole "dressing up as something you're not" idea. I must admit, however, that Dir en grey's old visual kei-era costumes are what really got me wanting to spend hours and hours sewing something.
What was your first costume and why?
I made a Zelgadis costume from the Slayers when I was twelve. I never wore it to a con, but I did where it to a costume party/dance (funny that close to no one dressed up) and on Halloween. I guess I made the costume because he was my favorite character and I thought it might be kind of funny to have a blue and green face. (it was until I tried to wash it off and the green just sorta faded, making it look like i had gangrene according to my mum)
What is your favorite costume and why?
So far I'd have to say the finished version of my "Tsumi to Batsu" Kaoru (Dir en grey) costume because: - it took me two years of work to finally be reasonably happy with it - it has massive feathers - I'm proud of the way it turned out - it's full of so many weird little design things that it intrigues pretty much everyone who sees it (although I don't really like it when people try to poke me...^^;) - I entered (and won best over all workmanship!) my first cosplay contest with it - DID I MENTION THE FEATHERS?!
Do you have a dream costume you'd like to make?
Kaoru's (Dir en grey) Akuro no Oka outfit--specifically that massive hat! Oh the hallways I could block the flow of traffic in w/ that hat! Oh, and Kaoru's "raison detre" outfit simply for the sheer "wtf factor" of the whole ensemble.
What has been your most memorable cosplay experience?
I don't know: they've all been memorable in their own way...although maybe not when I wore "Osaka Jo Hall" Kaoru because I didn't stay in it for very long. -__-'
Do you participate in masquerades?
I just started to. Kakkoi Con 2008 was my first masquerade (I wore "Tsumi to Batsu" for it) and I certainly plan to compete in the future (now that I realize that it's not actually that nerve-wracking to get up there and the judges don't REALLY breathe fire)
What was your best masquerade experience?
Kakkoi Con 2008--sure, it's my only experience, but it was a really rewarding experience. Prior to 2008, I had been too nervous about my sewing skills to enter any competitions, but finally I just said "Oh what the hell" and entered as a novice walkon. Turns out that my workmanship wasn't as bad as I always thought (I'm a perfectionist, I guess ^^;) and I won best overall workmanship. Besides that, it was just pretty damn fun to get up on stage and pose all "hardcore" like Kaoru. People actually cheered, which surprised me since I expected something more along the lines of "who the hell is she supposed to be?!" XD
Have you won any awards for your costumes?
Best Overall Workmanship at Kakkoi Con 2008 for my "Tsumi to Batsu" Kaoru (Dir en grey) costume
Tell us a little about yourself
I go to the University of Southern California where I am double majoring in International Relations and East Asian Languages and Cultures (Japanese). My family lives in Minneapolis, MN, so I do a fair amount of flying from LA to Mpls and back again. -___-' My interests include: drawing, guitar, languages (13 yrs of Spanish and 7 of Japanese), web design, anime, manga, music of various types (espcially Jrock/Visual Kei), sleeping, collecting absolutely insane boots, and sewing. I work as a research assistant for one of my professors on an international relations grant. It doesn't pay great, but it's interesting and it's rewarding to be working in my field of study while still an undergraduate.
Is there anything else you'd like to add?
Not really, but this blank space seems inviting...
