I've been interested in costumes my whole life, but only to the point of grabbing something out of my closet and making the closest aproximation I could. It was about 5 years ago that I tried my hand at making something from scratch, with my first Star Trek uniform for a sci-fi club I'm in. I wanted to make the Original Series uniform, but buying one was too expensive, so I made it. Then, about a two years ago, I embarked upon an epic quest--to make a warlock costume from World of Warcraft. In about 6 weeks of solid effort, including painting foam armor pieces while at work (and getting quite an odd reputation there) I'd completed my first big, real costume. And I haven't stopped yet.
I prefer costumes that require crafting over sewing. I don't like sewing that much and prefer to get my hands dirty with paint, glue, resin, etc. I've started sewing some historical gowns for sewing practice though.
