What got you into cosplay?
My mom had heard that there were such things as anime conventions and decided to scope it out. She found one in Boston (Anime Boston 2003) and after researching, she made my first cosplay for me and we went (even though we didn't get in since attendance was capped.) Since we did manage to get into PortConMaine 2003 and experience it, I found that cosplay and cons were a lot of fun, so that's what started everything.
What was your first costume and why?
Kurama from Yu Yu Hakusho. It was either him, Botan, or Ashitaka (from Mononoke Hime) and Kurama was my favorite character at the time.
What is your favorite costume and why?
Tenma. Looks great and he's nice and comfortable to wear. The best part is that I don't sweat to death wearing it, but I can pull up the jacket if I ever get cold.
Do you have a dream costume you'd like to make?
My ultimate dream will always be one of the officers from the Dynasty Warriors games.
What has been your most memorable cosplay experience?
I've met some of my good friends through cosplay. I can't think of one particular moment that shines above the others but new friends who are there to stay are definitely a wonderful thing!
Do you participate in masquerades?
Whenever I can get others to do it with me, absolutely! The masquerade may very well be one of my favorite parts of a convention. I think my favorite part of the masquerade itself is the feeling of unity with the other participants backstage.
What was your best masquerade experience?
During Anime Boston 2005, my friend and I did a skit where Toboe and Tsume come onstage looking for Cheza. To decide who gets her, they have a dance competition... Tsume doing the ParaPara and Toboe doing the chicken dance! We definitely got some great laughs from the audience!
Have you won any awards for your costumes?
So, far I've won one award for a costume I made myself. It was at a mini-con (not sure if it even really counts as that) and I won a boxset for getting first place in the Cosplay Contest as Guy from Tales of the Abyss (though, admittedly, my Guy cosplay wasn't that great -- keep looking out for a revamped version!). Winning an award at an actual con would be amazing but it's not something I care much about -- I'm in it to have fun!
Tell us a little about yourself
I'm in college and have no idea what I want to do with my life, but I'm sure I'll figure it out with time. My hobbies are obviously cosplay and I also enjoy photography quite a bit. People like my family and friends pretty much sustain me with their amazing awesomeness.
Is there anything else you'd like to add?
I know not everybody is in it for the fun, but cosplaying can be a really enjoyable hobby if you have fun with it! I often see people who get very stressed out at conventions over petty things and it's sad to see. Conventions are supposed to be fun, friendly environments so at least try to enjoy yourself a little bit. <3
