What got you into cosplay?
Ever since I was a little girl, I have loved dressing up as my favorite characters. Plus, all kinds of crafting, painting, sewing, and building stuff has always been my favorite hobby.. as well as playing tons of video games and burying myself in anime/manga/Japanese stuff.
The awesome Tranquility6487 invited me to come with her to a convention in 2004, and ever since then I haven't been able to stop! It was like all my favorite things mashed into one place, and I was surrounded by people who felt the same way.. so cool.
What was your first costume and why?
My very first cosplay was Noriko from Battle Royale. I bought all of the items from Goodwill. The wig I got was so horrible.. I chopped it all up beyond recognition. I used crayons and markers to make an "island map", which I then wrapped in Saran Wrap and tied with a cord around my neck. If I remember correctly, my exploding neck collar was a broken watch face and Foamies glued together and painted silver. I even was speckled with food coloring "blood" to look like I was injured.. it was such a complete mess!
I just remember feeling so excited about wearing it.. I REALLY liked that movie, and I had made it all myself. Even though it was complete fail, having people recognize my outfit was so cool and I'll never forget it.
That school uniform is still in my costume closet. I've learned so much since then, and looking back at it makes me kinda proud of all the achievements I've made since then.
Do you have a dream costume you'd like to make?
Someday I will make a Samus Aran costume. It will be extremely expensive, time-consuming, seizure inducing and MORE!
..but IT WILL BE DONE.. someday. ^o^
What has been your most memorable cosplay experience?
All of my experiences with cosplay have been memorable. I have met so many new friends, learned so many new things, and had such good times in the short amount of time I've been doing this.
I hope to meet many new faces and grow in my abilities with sewing and costuming, and also to have more fun times being a big nerd and doing what I love!
Do you participate in masquerades?
For right now, no. I have a small phobia of speaking in front of large crowds. Posing in costumes on stage doesn't bother me that much, but if I were speaking/acting too.. I'd surely crash and burn ^__^;;
Have you won any awards for your costumes?
Yes. Our Akatsuki group won "Best Small Group" at Metrocon 2007, and our Twilight Princess group won "Best Group" at Metrocon 2008.
It is extremely cool to have won awards for these.. everyone had put so much hard work into all of those costumes and it's nice to be recognized.
Tell us a little about yourself
I am in school. I attend Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, and I'm about to finish my Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry. I would love to go back and minor in Art or some other kind of creative study.
I have a family. I'm not married, and I still live at home for now. I love my pets. I love my friends. I have been dating AC for five awesome years; he's the coolest boy ever. <3
I enjoy my job. I work in an environmental testing lab downtown in Columbus, IN. It's interesting, and I enjoy working in the field that I'm studying.
I have many hobbies. These include: Gaming, doll collecting, sculpting, drawing, photography, making music, costuming (of course), collecting & building Gundam models/cool Lego sets.. etc etc.
Is there anything else you'd like to add?
I like noisy J-pop, IDM, and old Nicktoons. I'll eat anything ever. The beach is my favorite place. Pandas are my favorite animal. My favorite gum is Orbit Bubblemint and I like my pizza cheese only. I like weirdo fashion and bright colors/loud patterns. I'm crazy about animal rights. Eh?
My favorite anime
I've seen a lot, but my favorites are (not in order) FLCL, Cowboy Bebop, Dragonball, Paranoia Agent, Dead Leaves, Ranma 1/2, Azumanga Daioh, and Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Pretty much anything by Satoshi Kon or Akira Toriyama makes me smile.
My favorite game(s)
All time favorite: Legend of Zelda games.
Everything Nintendo is my favorite also by default.
I also love to play: Dance Dance Revolution, In the Groove, Beatmania, O2Jam, all those goofy rhythm games! The Sims, rare Atlus games, Disgaea, other cool RPG's.
My favorite book(s)
I enjoy reading any books involving William S. Burroughs, the Harry Potter series, or Lloyd Kaufman/Troma. I also like reading books about musicians I admire, people with psychological issues, or just obscure horror/science fiction. Hilarious literature is the best.
My favorite movies(s)
Too too many. My brain would explode listing them all.. I am a strange movie connoisseur. (haha!)
I definitely enjoy any film made by Troma or Takashi Miike.
My favorite actors/actresses
Uma Thurman, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Gary Oldman, Asano Tadanobu <3!
