What got you into cosplay?
Before I ever knew Cosplay existed, I was a big anime/manga fan and avid artist. When I attended my first anime convention, throughout the weekend I kept seeing people dressed up as these cool anime characters! It really inspired me to expand my artistic interest into making costumes.
What was your first costume and why?
I count two costumes as my first true Cosplay experience, which was for A-kon 2000 when I made Mill-chan from "Maze" and Mana from Malice Mizer's "Au Revoir" video simultaneously. Both were a great challenge because I really didn't know what I was doing and had to experiment with making up patterns, dye, lining, wig styling and cutting, appliques etc. before I ever learned about any of the above. But I think it was the trouble-shooting aspect that got me hooked on Cosplay after all.
I chose those costumes because I loved the Mana costume's design and I frequently karaoke'd songs from "Maze" at that time, so Mill-chan was an obvious tempting project.
What is your favorite costume and why?
I don't think I can pick a favorite costume of mine out of all of them; I love each for different reasons. Often my favorite is the one I am working on at the time. ^^
Do you have a dream costume you'd like to make?
Certainly there are costumes that I am saving for the right circumstances in the future. To be honest most of them are original designs that I'd like to make for my own enjoyment, but I also would like to make more costumes from movies and the sci-fi realm.
What has been your most memorable cosplay experience?
I am the most thankful for a couple of
things that I gained through my Cosplay experience. One is that I've made some true life-long
friends through this hobby, and another is that Costuming opened a world of boundless
creativity that has changed much of my life and my dreams.
Do you participate in masquerades?
I have participated in many competitions in the past. They were enjoyable and stressful at the same time. At the moment I am just having fun meeting people and working at my art tables at cons.
Also, because I have appeared numerous times as a cosplay guest and contest judge at cons, I've seen the "other side" of the coin so to speak, and my interest in competing has shifted to judging and helping others through sharing my experiences in panels.
What was your best masquerade experience?
Probably my first competition during Katsucon a few years ago, in a skit revolving around Angel Sanctuary.
Have you won any awards for your costumes?
Several awards for competing in national costume contests - for skit performances and craftsmanship, including multiple "Best of Show" honors.
You can find them on my site if you really want to know.
Tell us a little about yourself
Hm... I'm Chinese but have been living in the USA for a while now. I like being creative in many areas, and have been an artist for years. My bane seems to be time, as it's always against me. I want to have fun and work hard, and learn as much as I can. Not sure what else to say, but you can find a bit more info on me on my website www.angelicstar.net.
