What got you into cosplay?
My mom always sewed my Halloween costumes as well as other clothing. When I met my husband, we decided to make our own Halloween costumes. An obsession was born! I also make regular clothes, too.
What was your first costume and why?
The first costume was Queen Gueneviere for a Halloween party; my husband was Lancelot. I can't even find that dress now! We have done couples' costumes almost every year since then.
What is your favorite costume and why?
My favorite costume is the Clockwork Droid costume. I made it 100% on my own (usually my husband helps me come up with ideas on how to make certain elements) as a surprise for my husband. He is terrified of clowns, and I knew he'd absolutely flip when he saw the costume. And, of course, he did. I like it because it's obscure, but it still freaks people out. They don't even need to know what show it's from, it is just universally scary and awesome. Also, this costume was a lot of firsts for me: sculpting, being a "male" character (if droids are male) and making pants (all my other costumes are essentially ballgowns).
Although, now that I've finished my Susan costume, I think that is a new favorite, too. It's just plain awesome!
Do you have a dream costume you'd like to make?
I have about 10 dream costumes, but I'm trying to narrow it down to the coolest, the most unique, and the coolest (in terms of temperature)! The last two costumes I made are just the most hot and uncomfortable costumes ever, and I'm ready for something a bit lighter.
Now that I've strayed beyond sewing-only costumes, I want to continue to challenge myself!
What has been your most memorable cosplay experience?
Dragon*Con 2010 was my first Dragon*Con, and it was addicting. At one point I was standing in the middle of the lobby while dozens of people took pictures of me. It was fantastic! I made two kids and several grown women scream just by tilting my head. I can't wait to go back next year. I'll probably be a Clockwork Droid and Susan again, but also bring another new costume or two!
Another great experience - being at ChicagoTARDIS. I met a lot of great cosplayers there and immediately felt at home.
Do you participate in masquerades?
No, no masquerades! - Okay, I since have entered a masquerade at ChicagoTARDIS, only because everyone there said I should. And I won Best Workmanship - Novice. It was legen - wait for it - DARY!
What was your best masquerade experience?
ChicagoTARDIS. I loved that so many people loved my costume. It made all the hours of agony (that mask is PAINFUL, and I'd made myself as flat-chested as possible, and that was so uncomfortable) totally worth it.
Have you won any awards for your costumes?
Best Workmanship - Novice for Clockwork Droid at ChicagoTARDIS 2010
Tell us a little about yourself
I am a professional videographer, so I am a very creative person to begin with. I love sewing, even though every outfit ends up being thrown across the room at some point. Most of the time I find it very theraputic. Except for the time I put a hole in the wall with the serger because it kept unthreading for about four hours. When I'm not sewing, I'm running, working on my websites, TurboKicking, reading, raising money for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and mentoring runners with Team in Training, working on film projects, counted cross-stitching, or fighting the uphill battle against the weeds in my yard. I never sit still.
My favorite game(s)
Burnout, Prince of Persia
My favorite book(s)
Chronicles of Narnia, LOTR, anything by Tamora Pierce, We Have Always Lived in the Castle, lots of Young Adult books. I find them much more interesting than the SEX! DRUGS! themes in most adult fiction I've read.
My favorite character(s)
Susan Pevensie. I've always loved her character since I was a kid, although I disagree with what Lewis did with her character in the end. It was a total device and I pretend it didn't happen. I think he started caring more about the religion and less about coherent storytelling.
My favorite movies(s)
LOTR, Beauty and the Beast, Down with Love, Back to the Future
My favorite actors/actresses
Always changing! Orlando Bloom is a constant, though.
