What got you into cosplay?
When I first got into Sailor Moon years go, I had wanted to have a costume made. But I grew a bit older and forgot about it.
A couple of years later, I rediscovered anime with the Hellsing series. So, I wrote an Ethnography on the culture of cosplay (for my Anthropology senior thesis) and dressed up as a participant observation. I had so much fun that I was hooked.
What was your first costume and why?
Sir Integral Hellsing's knight suit from the anime Hellsing.
I still cringe thinking about that ugly green suit. But Integral is kickass, no matter what you put her in.
I chose this costume because she is my favorite character and, as much as one can look like a cartoon, I do a fine job portraying her.
What is your favorite costume and why?
The knight suit of Integral Hellsing from volume one of the Hellsing manga.
I was the first person to ever do this costume, though many more are following suit.
Do you have a dream costume you'd like to make?
I don't sew, but my dream commission is Mina's red dress from Dracula which I am having made for Dragon*Con 2009.
What has been your most memorable cosplay experience?
Meeting Kouta Hirano, the creator of Hellsing. OMG that was such a wonderful experience. He was so nice and humble for being the author of a freaking phenomena.
Tell us a little about yourself
I am a full-time student in psychology. My first BA is in anthropology, sociology and religious studies. Right now I model and work part time as a counselor at an adolescent in-patient facility.
When I graduate, I'm hoping to defer grad school for a year and go to Japan with the JET program to teach English. But we'll see how that goes.
