What got you into cosplay?
A love of anime and conventions. I was raised as a geek (I was watching Star Trek inutero, started anime in 4th grade) and loved seeing pictures from Star Trek conventions with all of the officers and klingons everywhere. I also wanted to go do that myself. So when I went to my first convention I didn't even see not cosplaying as an option.
What was your first costume and why?
My first costume was Lina Inverse. She was my role model from The Slayers. I was going to my first convention and decided I had to go as her.
Actually...if we're counting costumes someone else made for me, my first cosplay was Ariel from the Little Mermaid when I was around 5. The only why behind that is that the Little Mermaid is awesome and I was 5.
What is your favorite costume and why?
I really can't answer this question. I like each of my costumes for different reasons. Either because I love the reaction when I'm in them, or that I learned something really cool when I was making it. With how seldom I update this information as soon as I put down a favorite costume, it will have changed.
Do you have a dream costume you'd like to make?
Current dream costume is Sailor Moon's wedding dress made out of silks with each rose petal beaded and embroidered.
What has been your most memorable cosplay experience?
My first Best in Show. CapsuleCorp and I were competing Arshtat and Ferid from Suikoden V. Our performance had gone off well with only a few hitches that were solved by hot glue and creative walking, I didn't trip over my extra long train... We were fairly confident that we had taken best in class journeyman, but weren't going to count our chickens before they hatched.
We had competed there many times before, but this was the first year that they decided to speed up the trophy giving process by lining everyone up before hand. So they start listing off names, and they go through quite a few so we start to get nervous wondering when/if we're going to be called. Finally we hear our skit title, go "oh, there we are" and walk up.
It is then that we notice they have stopped reading names. We looked around confused wondering what was up. Maybe they dropped a piece of paper or something. So we're standing at the end of the line with no idea what's going on. There were so many masters with very nice costumes and performances the idea of Best in Show did not cross our minds. In fact there were so many masters up front waiting for judges awards that we figured they would be cycled back to pick up the major awards later. Made sense to us.
So they start handing out the awards and we slowly start moving up....that's when we notice that the masters aren't cycling back. In fact, they're just leaving....
At this point the fierce denial comes in, cause there was NO WAY we won Best in Show. We were just Journeymen in obscure video game costumes. Sure I had a floating crown, but still...
Long story short (too late), we're freaking out. It's becoming obvious what's coming but we're still not about to accept it. I think I got it first (CapsuleCorp may disagree but this is my retelling) when a looked at the 3 entries right ahead of us.
"Wait...Novice. Journeyman. Master.....shit."
Finally they call us. We're standing off stage holding hands and trying to look dignified despite shaking (yay long skirt). They got so many pictures of our reactions to getting that trophy. We looked so funny. Just a mix of joy, shock and BIG SHINY!
Hopefully it's the first of many, but I will never forget that emotional roller coaster.
Do you participate in masquerades?
YES! I'm a performer at heart. I'm love participating in masquerades and am starting to make the transition into holding the masquerade. I'm currently the assistance director for the Geek.kon masquerade after years of volunteering, so lets see how that goes.
What was your best masquerade experience?
See above, "most memorable experience."
