What got you into cosplay?
My grandma used to make me Pokemon and Harry Potter costumes when I was a little kid. I started making my own when I was 19 and attended my first FanimeCon.
What was your first costume and why?
The first costume I made was Drizzt from the Dark Elf Trilogy. He is one of my favorite fictional characters, and I admire him greatly. I have a whole suit of armor out of Cheerio boxes and duck tape. The cape was a table cloth, and the wig was like, $5 at a costume store. I covered every inch of exposed skin with crappy body paint that melted if you looked at it the wrong way.I won the grand prize at the Armorgeddon costume contest with this thing. Just goes to show, you can do anything with duck tape.
What is your favorite costume and why?
Bishop Hazel Grouse from Saiyuki Reload (the manga, not the screwy anime). He is so froofy and goofy, and I just adore him. Having cosplayed some heavily wigged and make-uped characters, I find Hazel refreshing. Not only can I get away with no wig, I can also use the bathroom without dismantling everything, and there is no make up to melt off. I love him, and plan to cosplay him for years to come.
Do you have a dream costume you'd like to make?
Hazel as his demon persona-thingy, Varaharu or whatevertheheck. I'm making the wings currently.
What has been your most memorable cosplay experience?
getting felt up by a chick while dressed as Prince Nuada from Hellboy II and having her yell: "Oh my god, you're a girl!"
And, of course, competing in the 2011 Masquerade at Fanime with my wonderful boyfriend Colin. We were Hazel and Gat, a Yaoi Dance team. We won a cool little prize for Best Choreography.
Do you participate in masquerades?
YES! did my second one with my boyfriend Colin who cosplays Gat and Artemis Entreri.
What was your best masquerade experience?
winning an award for doing a yaoi dance routine as Hazel and Gat. We looked sooooo silly!!
Have you won any awards for your costumes?
Grand Prize 2006 Armorgeddon costume contest.
Second Place Cabrillo Costume Contest as Prince Nuada.
Best Choreography for the 2011 Fanime Masquerade with boyfriend Colin Miller.
Tell us a little about yourself
I am a senior (one more year!!!) at UCSC in the Creative Writing-Fiction department. I recently got my first short story published, and am finishing my first novel. I am an endurance runner, mountain biker, dirt bike rider, athletic nutbar who loves to be outside getting exercise! I am an archery instructor, and participate regularly in traditional archery competitions. I love my job as the coordinator for the UCSC Creative Writing program, and working as a tutor in writing and as an archery coach and house sitter. I will soon be applying to doctorate programs in literature, and hopefully doing said program in UCSC. I collect old keys.
Is there anything else you'd like to add?
I have two modes, full energy, and dead. So, I'm either doing 100 things at once or lying on top of Colin with a book and a cup of coffee.
