What got you into cosplay?
Seeing cosplayers at cons. Even if the costumes were ghetto, it was always a thrill to see an anime character walking around in the flesh and trying to identify them. After my first con, I just had to try it. I think that every anime/manga fan has to cosplay at least once, or else they can't call themself a true fan, can they?
What was your first costume and why?
Den of Barjack from Gunnm. Gunnm is my favorite manga, so that's where I had to start, no excuses. And Den is arguably one of the coolest male characters from the series, plus building that kind of costume would be a technical challenge. I like a challenge.
What is your favorite costume and why?
Sechs, probably. That's because it required a lot of new, different skills and for the amount of time put into it, I think it came out well. Plus she's got a cool-ass prop.
Do you have a dream costume you'd like to make?
I've made my dream costume, so that question's moot. But as long as we're aiming high, how about AR-10 from Battle Angel Alita? That costume would have to be housed in an aircraft hangar and I'd need to find some Romanian gymnast to wear it. But damn, it'd be awesome.
What has been your most memorable cosplay experience?
Walking through downtown Baltimore in full armor, with sword and glowing eyes, and hearing the hobos curse in drunken amazement and fear.
Do you participate in masquerades?
Not usually, because they seem to take up the entire day.
What was your best masquerade experience?
Entering the AX 09 Masq. So many big-name cosplayers and awesome costumes were there and the crowd was huge. It was a helluva rush.
Have you won any awards for your costumes?
Shiokaze-con '06: 2nd place Group
AX '09: Runner-up Best Group Craftmanship
Tell us a little about yourself
I'm a geotechnical engineer in Austin. I've lived in Texas my whole life. I'm single and I like bread. And . . . can't think of anything else.
My favorite anime
Oof. There are so many to choose from, but if I had to pick one series to take with me to a desert island, it'd be Fruits Basket. My favorite movie just might be Tokyo Godfathers, or Laputa, it's hard to decide.
From stuff that's out now, mmm, Genshiken, Scrapped Princess, Planetes, etc.
My favorite game(s)
Nippon Ichi stuff is always lots of fun.
My favorite book(s)
Any manga by Yukito Kishiro. And Azumanga/Yotsuba-to.
My favorite character(s)
Anime: Osaka from Azumanga Daioh. She's such a space cadet, you know that everytime she opens her mouth, it's gonna be something totally off-the-wall.
Manga: Sechs from Gunnm: Last Order. As much as I like Alita, Sechs is more feral and hardcore than Alita ever was. I just love seeing how her anger and fiery spirit propel her down her chaotic path.
My favorite movies(s)
The Professional by Luc Besson. Sure, it's kinda old, but I still think it's an awesome, touching movie. Amongst contemporary films, The Last Samurai. Guess I just like tragic endings.
My favorite actors/actresses
Jean Reno maybe?
