What got you into cosplay?
Phantom of the Opera. That is if we take Cosplay in its broadest sense as costumed play:) I always wanted to be Christine.. singing, dancing, being adored.. then I realised there was too much obsession of her by both male leads;) And that's not appealing.
So it was her dresses I wanted;)
I did historical based costumed characters for a while, Eliza Bennet, Christine.. etc.. and then I noticed how people were dressing up as Japanese animation characters. I had been a fan of the animation style, and manga actually so it was a logical step.
Actually I have no anime or otherwise inspired costumes made as yet, but I am looking at a few:) Sena Robin and Charlotte from VHD (well not the *big* dress) appeal for the sedate nature of their costume.
What was your first costume and why?
As the file suggests it was my first costume and it was for Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again. I used it for a "song in costume" class at a big singing competition in 1995.
I won:) Not for singing in tune I have to add.. that came *much* later, but I moved the audience... and had a nice costume:)
What is your favorite costume and why?
Sadly all my favourite costume have undergone major trauma in the form of a house fire getting them all sooty and smokey and then cleaners ruining some. But still my Cleves dress (red and black in my photo folder) is my favourite and I will tend to it and care for it once I have a home to be able to pull it apart and repair. The headdress was the product of months of reasearch and many weeks making. Sadly that needs to be totally remade.
Do you have a dream costume you'd like to make?
It keeps changing.. but the biggie, the one at the back of my mind all the time is Mina Murray's red silk dress from Bram Stoker's Dracula. The one with Winona Ryder and Gary Oldman.
I have the silk but am very strongly inclined to make several items from it instead.
What has been your most memorable cosplay experience?
Positive and negative reaction by fellow Kiwi cosplayers. But if we include SCA in the broad term of "cosplay"then being asked to be a laurel in April 2007.
Do you participate in masquerades?
Yes:) But there are not many I can attend;) And only if I have a new costume.
I do enter A&S displays and competitons in the SCA and other historically minded groups as well.
What was your best masquerade experience?
Winning the Armageddon Cosplay Contest in Auckland for the 2nd time.
Have you won any awards for your costumes?
The first two Cosplay competitions held in Auckland. The first was Galadriel and the second was Satine.
A picnic Lord of the Rings costume contest... 2nd place.
And I helped a Dragon*Con hall costume winner.
Shared best costume prize for my work in local theatre.
Earned a Peerage in the SCA for my contibution to coduming (research mostly.)
Tell us a little about yourself
I have Rheumatoid Arthritis* which is not just painful but has a huge impact on all aspects of health. It is getting increasingly difficult to spend any time in any costume let along make them. In fact I'm heavily cutting back on making items for the future.
I try to avoid as much embroidery as possible as I have no catilidge left in my wrists. And while being a cyborg does have it's pros, trying to get through security with metal joint replacements is probaly not that cool;)
Is there anything else you'd like to add?
Take care of yourself, but do things now, there will never be a "perfect" time.
My favorite anime
Haibane Renmei, it is such a touching, and sweet series. Wait til the ending.
Nausica, the Last Unicorn (let's not split hairs.. it was animated in Japan), Spirited Away.
I love what I have seen of Witch Hunter Robin.
My favorite game(s)
Lemmings... really I don't really do games and that was the last one I can remember being even vaguely good at.
Jigsaw, solitaire of all kinds... and a Dutch card game which is similar to Rummy-Cup.

The Discworld novels by Terry Pratchett. All the answers to life are in there;) Really, go read.
oh and Pride and Prejudice, Persuasion, Dracula, Phantom of the Opera and the collected works of Saki.
