About Me / Q&A

What got you into cosplay?
In 7th grade, two of my best friends and I went to our first con (A-kon 13 in 2002) and heard that people dressed up. A group of my friends had gone as the Sailor Senshi for Halloween in 5th grade or so, so we decided to use those costumes (I borrowed mine from another girl in the original group). We had an amazing time! There we also discovered another aspect of cosplay, the masquerade. It looked like so much fun that we rounded up the rest of our friends and at the next local con, we entered and won the masquerade contest! The name of our cosplaying group is RANDUM and we won the Best in Show prize at Anime Fest's Masquerade for the years 2002, 2003, and 2004. The group has changed a lot since then, but we still cosplay together and hope to return to the stage one day.
What was your first costume and why?
I was Sailor Mercury mainly because my friends wanted to go as the Sailor Senshi, it was already made, I couldn't sew very well, and I went along for the ride.
What is your favorite costume and why?
My favorite costume has got to be my Earthy Card ^.^. I like it best because I've never had to overcome so many odds and jump so many hurdles in order to get a costume done on time. It was my first wig and my first mold-making/ casting experience. And I have a ton of great memories of the group helping me on it. From giving great advice, to letting me borrow their tools, to three of us frantically trying to get me dressed in time for the walk-on at AnimeFest 2008 (spikes and glue and paint EVERYWHERE), to just giving me the extra push when I was fed up with all of the problems it presented, they were there all the way.
Do you have a dream costume you'd like to make?
Well, Earthy was it, but now that she's done I need to find another one.
What has been your most memorable cosplay experience?
:) Our first ever masquerade, AnimeFest 2002. Even though we were one of the last in line and had to wait backstage for hours, we couldn't have had more fun! It was like we had suddenly been thrust into this bustling and tight-knit community that welcomed everyone. No matter how new you were, how shabby your costume was (*raises hand* I didn't even have a wig, I just sprayed my hair blue XD), how terrible your skit sounded, you were supported, taken care of, and loved. Of course winning Best in Show was the icing on the cake, as well as completely unexpected, but my first masquerade (which I also consider my initiation to the cosplay society) is one of the best memories in my life.
Do you participate in masquerades?
Yes!
What was your best masquerade experience?
Same as my most memorable cosplay experience.
Have you won any awards for your costumes?
Well, my group and I have won for our skits (which costume is accounted for, I suppose) in 2002, 2003, and 2004. And I won a judges award for my Earthy Card cosplay at AnimeFest 2008.
Tell us a little about yourself
I'm an '07 high school graduate and currently attend The Fashion Institue of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) in Los Angeles, California. In high school I was also a member of our color guard (the marching band kind, not ROTC) and winterguard. I was captain my Jr. and Sr. years and love my girls as my family. This past summer I had the honor of spinning in the Phantom Regiment Color Guard and hope to continue with the Regiment in the future. I also played the violin in my school's orchestra for 7 years. Something kinda interesting about me is that I was on my school's robot team which won nationals my senior year. I love to paint, draw, read, write, dance, design costumes, role-play, play video games, watch movies with friends, sing in the shower, daydream, do yoga, and I'm just now getting started in photography.
Is there anything else you'd like to add?
My nick-name amongst my friends is Lolo, and I consider it my "cosplay name", but unfortunately I joined Cosplay.com before the nick-name was given the chance to stick, and now I can't change my username D: . So, even though Kiniro Hoshi is my name on this site, you're most likely to find me under "Lolo" or "LoloHoshi" on other sites ^.^
