What got you into cosplay?
It started as a desire to not dress up as a ninja every year. Now, I cosplay because 1) it makes the most out of my artistic abilities and creativity, and 2) it feels good to escape reality--if only for a weekend--and be someone else for a change.
What was your first costume and why?
I started with Zhen Ji from Dynasty Warriors 5 at Otakon 2005. It was really really popular, which encouraged me to continue cosplay (Well even if it failed I would have continued anyway).
What is your favorite costume and why?
My favorite costume tends to be the latest one I make. Since I'm still a beginner, my craftsmanship improves with every costume I make, so the next one usually comes out better than the previous one.
Do you have a dream costume you'd like to make?
One day I want to cosplay as tetsu from L'Arc~en~Ciel, in his 1999 Grand Cross Conclusion concert outfit.
"I'd also like to do a better and more detailed Dynasty Warriors costume, but I haven't decided which character yet." <--Dream fufilled with DW7 Yue Ying.
"And perhaps once I become a pro, I can cosplay as Lenneth from Valkyrie Profile." That's what I once said a few years back. But now with Silmeria on my list of costumes, the dream of crafting cosplay armor has just about come true for me.
I have a secret cosplay that I want to work on, but because it requires a lot of material I may never get to do it :(
What has been your most memorable cosplay experience?
Hm...probably when I was dressed up as Zhen Ji, and my best friend called me in the convention saying that she spotted Zhang He (my FAVORITE DW character). She made HER (it was crossplay) wait so that I could catch up and meet up with them. When we finally met, I was just so excited, and people began crowding around us asking for pictures, and one person asked to videotape me playing my flute. I knew then that I was going to love cosplaying.
Another experience was during Otakon 2011, when I ran into an unlikely pair of HUGE Dynasty Warriors fans while dressed up as Yue Ying. They were so excited to see me, as DW cosplay in the US isn't very common, especially not on the East Coast. This is why I like to choose uncommon characters--it puts smiles on the faces of those few fans out there looking for something different. :)
Do you participate in masquerades?
I'm not exactly ready for that yet ^^;
Have you won any awards for your costumes?
I got an Honorable Mention for my Silmeria costume at Katsucon 2010, my very first and only Hall Costume contest so far. I've thought of improving it later on for future cons, but because of all the detailing and maintenance required I decided to retire it and work on something else when I get the chance.
