What got you into cosplay?
Well.... that is a very tough question. I have always loved anime, but my first convention was at Necronomicon, a very small sci-fi convention in Tampa. I just thought that one was cool, so it did leave an impact on me. A little while after I remember going to the AnimeNation retail store and seeing a little flyer about Metrocon 2003 just starting up and so I asked my parents if I could go. I just loved every part of conventions from the beginning.
What was your first costume and why?
My first actual cosplay, not just Halloween costumes, was Shinji Ikari. I made it from thrift store pieces and a cassette player. I even made the little head monitor thingies. It was the most fun I have ever had in costume. Evangelion has always been and might always be -- my absolute favorite anime.
What is your favorite costume and why?
Definitely Kingdom Hearts Cloud. It is very sentimental to me. I only made two costumes from 2006 to 2011. I was going to school full-time and working two jobs over 40+ hours a week..... so cosplay was not even a speckle on my mind during these years. That costume was created during my final semester after writing my thesis and it really means a lot to me. I figured I had to make up for all the years I lost at conventions while I was in college. It is a very emotional experience for me to finally "be back" into the hobby I love.
Do you have a dream costume you'd like to make?
Wow the list is pretty much limited to two choices - ahem* ... requirements.
Kaneda from Akira, with his bike is the pinnacle. It will have to move on its own too. It is just the one that must happen -- I mean I can never stop going to cons before it is complete.
The next is Nightmare from Soul Calibur. It just seems like the challenge is what entices me the most.
Of course - both will take forever..
What has been your most memorable cosplay experience?
Most memorable cosplay experience was at Necronomicon 2005 when I was dressed as Vash the Stampede from Trigun. I won the all-around best costume and best anime costume both at once. It was only my third costume and I was 15 years old so I just remember the whole thing as bigger then life. Everyone was so nice to me and offered nothing but compliments. My love for "my love" was set in stone that year.
Do you participate in masquerades?
I never seek to win competitions. I am someone who does this for myself. It is what makes me, as a person, truly happy. I could care less about the drama, seriousness, or stress people lay into being the center of attention at conventions -- and in life.
That being said, I love to know that I may make someone smile from time-to-time. I would rather meet nice people and give-and-take a few smiles, then instead win some competition without.
Have you won any awards for your costumes?
Yes - but I was asked to attend the masquerade by the conventions organizer - I just could not refuse such merit!
Tell us a little about yourself
I feel this section would have to be updated daily!
Is there anything else you'd like to add?
I got my Bachelors in History and wrote my thesis on Piracy in the Caribbean. I am in love with the history of piracy and obviously attack the Disney movies with full force every second as they screw it up. Still it is an example of the romanticization that pirates have been endowed with over the hundreds of years and part of why they still are so popular. They truly were villains of all nations, but free men to do as they please.
I also thing Teddy Roosevelt was the greatest president, which I am bias towards.
My favorite anime
Mostly the ones before the year 2000.
My favorite game(s)
Dungeons & Dragons ..... just not 4th edition. Starcraft forever
My favorite book(s)
The Hobbit, Treasure Island, all of Potter
My favorite character(s)
My friends would say that I always choose the eldest and wisest person in any popular culture. I just feel like they never need to fight as hard as the young - think smarter, not harder
My favorite movies(s)
Umm... no to this question
My favorite actors/actresses
HAHA Bruce Willis
