What got you into cosplay?
Art has always been a part of my life, and it has developed from traditional pen and paper sketches in my adolescence to costume design and cosplay fabrication since July 2013.
What was your first costume and why?
Alexstrasza is the first cosplay I attempted. She always stood out to me in my adventures through Northrend and Cata as the badass red dragonqueen that got shit done. Lifebinder, bitch. She has a beautiful character design, and I felt it was the challenge of recreating her armour that got me so excited in cosplay in the first place. This costume was not easy to make, but I am proud of my results.
For a first timer, a lot of the four months I spent on her costume was just brainstorming, sketching and planning with crafting time inbetween. I wanted to be pretty, practical, comfortable and proportionate. My progress was really slow – I’m definitely not someone who puts together a costume a week before a con – but I don’t mind. Half the fun with cosplay for me is crafting and learning new techniques, so I prefer not to rush through the journey!
I Googled other Alexstrasza cosplays to see how other girls did and learned from their successes and mistakes so I could apply their experience into my own. It was such a big help reading and seeing other’s progress pictures and blog posts that I decided to take pictures and write about my own progress in hopes that one day I can help other people with their cosplays too.
I started Alexstrasza a month after I completed the Tough Mudder event up in Whistler as a reminder to keep my butt in shape. I want to look good in my costumes, and more importantly stay strong and continue training hard for next year’s Tough Mudder event. Alexstrasza kept me on track and kicked off my finite cosplay endeavours! I learned a lot during her costume work in progress, and I will continue to build on my crafting techniques.
What is your favorite costume and why?
My favorite cosplay is Mercy. It was built over a year and a half, casually working on it throughout university and a part-time job. I wore a couple different variations of this cosplay as I continued to work on parts of the outfit between conventions, and I was finally satisfied with my third variation of Mercy in August 2016. Many aspects of this cosplay were a challenge because the techniques I needed to use were mostly new for me. It was my first time building wings, crafting clean armour, gradient dying fabric, wig styling and working with a stepper motor and Arduino controller to control my staff to spin.
Do you have a dream costume you'd like to make?
Not particularlly. I cosplay whatever comes to mind!
What has been your most memorable cosplay experience?
Meeting people as Mercy at TwitchCon and getting tons of photos taken.
