What got you into cosplay?
Before I even knew what cosplay was, I once purposely did my hair like Quistis Trepe's - I had recently finished FF8, my first RPG, and was enamored with the idea of a female character I liked who bore a physical resemblance to me. My first full cosplay was for Anime Central 2003, my first convention, because my then-boyfriend (now husband), who'd attended the con in previous years, thought it'd be neat to cosplay as a couple.
What was your first costume and why?
Celes Chere, Final Fantasy VI, because she was my favorite of the strong blonde female leads I'd encountered up to that point in my then-short gaming "career." My boyfriend went as Edgar Figaro from the same game.
What is your favorite costume and why?
Hikari, from Haibane Renmei, which I wore at Anime Central 2004. I came up with some pretty clever ways to make the wings and handle the halo problem, and there was no mistaking me for anything else. It's my most-recognized costume so far, and ties with my 2005 Final Fantasy Tactics Oracle costume for my most accurate cosplay - accuracy is important to me. However, the Sniper Wolf costume I did for ACen 2006 definitely ranks as the one I was been most excited about during the construction process.
Do you have a dream costume you'd like to make?
I would love to crossplay as Solid Snake. I'd also enjoy cosplaying The Boss's Virtuous Mission outfit and crossplaying The Sorrow, but what I'd really like to do is eventually gain the skills to make The Boss's white-and-silver Operation Snake Eater outfit. I'm also very interested in doing another FF Tactics costume (female Summoner), and I really want to try cosplaying Chell (the player character in Portal). Additionally, my husband and I want to try cosplaying and Shuji and Chise sometime.
What has been your most memorable cosplay experience?
In no particular order: 1) Several girls asking permission to glomp me as Hikari; 2) Encountering one of the only other FFT cosplayers at ACen 2005 and clinging in a small group like young children, demanding that the Final Fantasy photoshoot group remember to take out a minute to get our paltry group of three; 3) Organizing a well-attended Metal Gear Solid gathering at ACen 2006 and all the fun we had at the gathering.
Do you participate in masquerades?
No; that night of the convention, when everything else is closed down is the time my friends and I get together, eat pizza, play video games, and catch up on each other's lives.
