What got you into cosplay?
My friend Katie (she goes by kali or kaligoddess and lurks around in the forums). She pretty much said, I'm coming to stay with you, I'm bringing friends, and you might want to put a costume together. That was Otakon 2004. Since then, I've come to embrace the convention spirit on my own.
What was your first costume and why?
The first time I dressed up at all was Otakon 2004, but I wasn't dressed up as anything in particular. Black vest, long sleeved white shirt, and a black and white checker hat that I made myself. I hefted an impressive looking old fashioned black umbrella around and had mock sword fights with it. The fun part was watching people try to guess who I was. The first time I dressed up as an actual character was Katsucon 2005. That's when I put together my Tabetha Cohen costume (from Reman Mythology, an excellent web comic). It was the first one I completely made from scratch, and I can honestly say I was the first cosplayer for that comic. However, it took me two conventions to find anyone that recognized me.
What is your favorite costume and why?
For a while, I would have said Kaylee, hands down, but the idea of going as Yomiko Readman is starting to grow on me.
Do you have a dream costume you'd like to make?
Well, I got a year's worth of use out of the Kaylee costume, and I've just begun to wear my newly constructed Yomiko Readman costume.
What has been your most memorable cosplay experience?
My desire to cosplay as ever so slightly obscure characters means that when I do get recognized, it's by some very intense fans. I get tackle-hugged, some squealing, etc. My single most memorable experience was probably at Otakon 2006. I was wearing my Kaylee costume at the time, and a fellow congoer dressed up as Mal came by our table in Artist Alley and was ogling the Jayne hats I'd made. Then he left his camera behind. Well, we saw him later in the hall and returned his camera to him. After that, apparently, he started telling all his friends that Kaylee saved his camera. Katie and I still see him at numerous conventions.
Do you participate in masquerades?
No, but I'd like to. I'm, uh, really painfully shy. Working on that part.
Tell us a little about yourself
I graduated last year, with a degree in Computer Science. When I'm not up to my usual computer geekery, I sew, knit, read, write, doodle, etc. I keep busy.
My favorite anime
Read or Die, Cowboy Bebop, Hellsing, Trigun, Bleach (I actually started with the manga for this one...)
My favorite book(s)
Hmmm, this is a tough one. I own roughly 700 books at the moment (I used to own more, but I had to give a lot away when I moved out of my parents' house last summer). Here's a short recent list: His Dark Materials - Philip Pullman, Abhorsen Trilogy - Garth Nix, Darkangel Trilogy - Margaret Anne Pierce (guilty favorite), anything by Tamora Pierce, The Dark is Rising sequence - Susan Cooper, many books by Dianna Wynne Jones, The Goose Girl (and its sequels) - Shannon Hale, The Blue Sword - Robin McKinley, Sunshine - Robin McKinley, The Riddlemaster of Hed trilogy - Patricia McKillip, anything by Patricia Wrede. There are others, but I'm starting to blank out on their titles. I should write a list of books I can't stand. Should be good for starting forum wars.
My favorite character(s)
Kaylee and Yomiko Readman, obviously. Well, there are some others as well, but I'm less likely to cosplay as them. My figure doesn't always work well for scrawny little Japanese girls.
