What got you into cosplay?
I've always liked making costumes, and playing video games. Then I found out there's a subculture that involves people who make costumes of video game characters and dress up in them. ...Well now!
What was your first costume and why?
I believe my first character costume was made in 1998, Vincent Valentine from FF7. I just thought I could pull the character off well, and apparently I didn't do too badly...
What is your favorite costume and why?
Sydney Losstarot from Vagrant Story. Ohhh, do I love Sydney as a character (and the whole game). I never dreamed I could actually cosplay him, since he goes around topless and has metal limbs... so the fact I actually managed to cosplay him, and (judging from the comments) cosplay him WELL... my best accomplishment.
Do you have a dream costume you'd like to make?
Yorda (ICO) was one, Sydney (Vagrant Story) was another, Ban's card arc ritual outfit (Get Backers manga) was another... Still haven't made Leknaat (Suikoden), but after those three it should be a breeze.
What has been your most memorable cosplay experience?
Walking onstage as Larsa for the first time at ACen 2007 - and getting squeals from the audience before I'd even done anything. XD It totally threw me off and I kind of missed a cue due to being so startled, but it was awesome. :D
Do you participate in masquerades?
Only started at ACen 2007, since I have no faith in my craftsmanship, and I never had anyone reliable enough before that I could count on them being able to handle skits. After doing it even just that once, I was kind of hooked! More about the performing than the costuming, though - I'm such a ham.
What was your best masquerade experience?
Hmm, probably Otakon 2007. Backstage freakouts and costume malfunctions from other people in my group, the possibility that a prop was going to break onstage and drop me on my butt, and WTF 6000 people in the audience - but then I walked onstage, and totally forgot all of that and just had a wonderful time. And we totally nailed it.
Then I was relaxing in the back of the green room and not being able to hear the awards being announced, and honestly not expecting anything and not caring because I'd just enjoyed performing so much... then hearing the rest of my group who were up at the front screaming excitedly and yelling at me to come join them, and bring the chocobos. XD
Have you won any awards for your costumes?
My Vincent Valentine costume won RPGamer's Halloween costume contest the year I made it. I got a copy of Pokemon Red. =)
Otakon 2007 - Judge's Choice award: Second Annual "Best Use of Queen" Award for FFXII skit "Grand Theft Chocobo"
ACen 2008 - Judge's Choice award: FFIV skit "And There Was Much Rejoicing"
Tell us a little about yourself
Used to draw, but was too passionate about it and it upset me, so I quit. Costuming is a nice substitute, as is fanfiction. Enjoy RPing, when it's with nice sane people, and cosplay is also an outgrowth of that. Any character I cosplay, I've probably also RPed, or at the very least, written fanfic about.
In the "real world", I work third shift at a gas station, which is actually a pretty awesome job - sure I have to clean a gas station every night, but it takes about two hours, and then I have about five more before anyone else shows up, and I can sit in the back and get paid to play my DS. :D
I live with my wonderful girlfriend, our two very silly cats who enjoy shedding on anything I'm sewing, and hope that soon I will be living with bunnies again too. I've been obsessed with rabbits since I was two, owned them since I was nine. (Why haven't I made a Viera costume yet?)
Is there anything else you'd like to add?
The "MacGyver of Cosplay" thing came from a friend on LJ after I posted about having made ninja shoes for my upcoming Sasuke costume in an hour or so with some cheap sandals, leftover scrap fabric, and a hot glue gun. After making Sasuke's wig stand up decently via five minutes work with some leftover pipe cleaners, I decided it was appropriate.
