What got you into cosplay?
My brotherling, who said "You should come visit! And since there's a con that weekend, you should come for it and dress up!"
And, being weak versus my sewing machine, I said, "Okay!"
And then the rest of my Seattle family said, "Hey, we have more things planned. You'll join in, right?"
And it was all downhill from there. :D
What was your first costume and why?
My first finished cosplay was Ise Nanao from Bleach; the cosplay group I went to Sakuracon with knew they would be doing that series early, and Nanao not only required no serious hair changes, but let me wear my glasses besides. My brotherling went as Shunsui, which made for even more fun.
I suppose if you want to be wholly technical, my first costume would've been the Ren Faire garb I made back in '98, when I worked my first Renaissance Faire. Not sure how much that counts, though.
What is your favorite costume and why?
Uncomfortable as it may be at times, I think Kanzeon just might be my favourite. It's a pain to get into but reasonably comfortable once it's on, it's not nearly as overwhelmingly warm as I thought it'd be (or at least it's controllable), and I get to be a complete snarky bitch with moments of epic awesome. What's not to like? XD
Do you have a dream costume you'd like to make?
Yes. In fact, several. :p Lots, even. And I'm not about to list all of them below, because that'd be a very long list.
One dream cosplay in the early stages is is Elisabeth's red ballgown (from "Saigo no Dance") from the Takarazuka (Hoshigumi) production of Elisabeth; I covet that dress in all its glorious floofiness. And it's Not White! (Have been threatened with multiple Der Tods. Bonus! XD )
What has been your most memorable cosplay experience?
There are really just too many possibilities for this. Each con brings something new and wonderful, and just when I think it's reached maximum awesome, that gets topped. :3
Do you participate in masquerades?
Haven't ever yet for myself, though I've been ninja/handler/stage mom for friends. Don't know that I'll ever compete, since I'm never happy enough with what I make.
Have you won any awards for your costumes?
Got a hall cosplay award for my (thoroughly unfinished and "anime-style") Kaya at ALA '09. That was completely unexpected.
Tell us a little about yourself
I'm the age I am and going on old, a tech/junior engineer for a major medical device company, and a perpetual dabbler and procrastinator. It was Renaissance Faires and the SCA that got me started on serious sewing, though I'm an amateur at best -- never picked up a pattern until I cosplayed! Other distractions? I roleplay, read sf/f and historical nonfiction, write, make truffles, watch entirely too many shiny things and fuss around with all sorts of textile arts when there's time between other things, and I like to travel to other countries, which definitely eats into cosplay money and vacation time. And have some serious workaholic tendencies I still struggle with.
Is there anything else you'd like to add?
If only I had a resorbable clone I could send to work in my place. Then I'd have both the time *and* the money to do everything I want!
