What got you into cosplay?
I've been sewing costumes for many years - since I got a sewing machine as a high school graduation present. Mostly I'd been interested in historical costumes, but as I started attending sci-fi conventions in college, I became interested in sci-fi/fantasy costuming as well. When I also became an anime fan, I wanted to start recreating some of the beautiful costumes I saw onscreen.
What was your first costume and why?
Kenshin - as part of a set of Kenshin & Kaoru. I'd been costuming for years, but hadn't done media recreations before. And I happened at the time to have red hair and a short, dark-haired friend. If no actual knowledge about kimono. (Fixed that part.)
What is your favorite costume and why?
Myaku Toshiya from Dir en Grey - it took a lot of time and money to get it to the point where I feel like it's good enough, but I love wearing it. I'm always proud of it when I wear it - it makes me feel like a rock star.
Do you have a dream costume you'd like to make?
The list is too long.. and I'm already making half of them. I don't care about how elaborate a costume is - I don't think that complicated necessarily means good. So long as it's an outfit I love, that's what's most important.
Do you participate in masquerades?
Only as part of a group when someone else can be the brains of the operation.
Have you won any awards for your costumes?
A number of craftsmanship awards.
Tell us a little about yourself
I'm a librarian. I like my job. I have two cats, a bunch of friends who don't mind me dressing them up in silly costumes, and an SO who makes an excellent Shinya. I like to dance, I'm an ikkyu in kendo, I play in a taiko drumming ensemble, and I have failed miserably at learning Japanese. A partial list of things I do not believe in: ghosts, fairies, ancient astronauts, Atlantis, deities, reincarnation, the healing power of magnets, alternative medicine, Bigfoot, astrology, spoon bending, auras, flower therapy, numerology, and the Bermuda Triangle. "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence." (Carl Sagan)
Is there anything else you'd like to add?
Why don't I want you to call me "-chan"? Here's why: 1) I'm comfortably over 30 years old, 2) I'm not Japanese, and 3) I've never met you.
