I've been cosplaying since 2003. I was about to attend my first con, when a friend said she had heard that people cosplay at cons. So, I decided to do it too, and that's how everything began.
Back in middle school, my Home Ec. textile work grades were... not good. Average, but I was in no way a whiz with the sewing machine. After that, I've discovered the fun in sewing and now I do stuff that I never dreamed of doing. I'm still not terribly good, (you should see the insides of my costumes!) but I manage to fake it pretty well. Though I have managed to make a couple of corsets that I really take pride in. The actual sewing isn't my favorite thing though, I enjoy embroidery and beading more.
I take cosplay seriously, but not overly seriously. I like to make my costumes well, and I like seeing beautifully done costumes, but I hold the belief of "to each their own". If someone wants to make a sloppily thrown-together costume, that's their thing and their priorities in cosplay are different from mine. I do however reserve the right to have an opinion about costumes, crappy or not.
As for the characters I tend to cosplay, they're usually female. I have done crossplay as well, but due to the size of my chest, I've decided to leave the men to others. I also tend to like the women more in games/manga/anime. There's also a common theme of toughness, leadership and other characteristics usually attributed to men in the characters I choose. I don't know how similar these women are to me, but I know that I would like to be like them if need be.
I don't do commissions, because I'm horribly lazy at making costumes for others. It just doesn't spark me like making them for myself does. I guess I'm selfish that way.
