About Me / Q&A

What got you into cosplay?
My brother went to the Auckland Armageddon Expo in 2006 and told me all about the Cosplay Competition there. I thought it sounded really fun, and decided I wanted to enter, and that he should too - and we've been cosplaying ever since!
What was your first costume and why?
The first costume I ever made was Yuna from Final Fantasy X. I'd always loved her character, and thought her costume was gorgeous - and relatively straightforward given my total lack of sewing knowledge at the time. Even now, I'm entirely self-taught!
What is your favorite costume and why?
[Copy pasted from my interview at DoubleStitch.co.nz - http://www.doublestitch.co.nz/wordpress/?p=245 ] HmmÖ Hard to say! Visually it would be Rosa, hands down. I love oogling photos of this costume (so vain, hahah), because there are just so many little details, and Iím so happy with how it looks. It is an incredibly uncomfortable and thus very draining costume to wear though (I always hit my spikes on doorways!), so I donít think Iíll ever wear it to a con again, sadly. To wear, it would be Kero. I get so many people asking for hugs and photos in that costume Ė I call it my happy costume. XD Itís very comfortable too, which is definitely a bonus in itself. I just have a lot of good memories in the costume as well, which make me more fond of it. The costume Iím actually most proud of though, is my Cross Edge!Flonne. Since Rosa, Iíve been on a bit of a construction kick Ė I just got so sick of having to hold costumes together by safety pins and needing to repair them in between wears that I really wanted to focus on making a costume that was really well made (somewhat documented in my Durability Project ). Iíve never had any kind of training in how to sew, so itís not the easiest thing for me, but I think I want to do it simply because itís something Iím not good at Ė to prove it to myself or something.
Do you have a dream costume you'd like to make?
I have no idea who the artist is, or what the name of the fairy is, but I'd love to make this costume one day - http://twitpic.com/2fzrj7 Beyond that though, Beatrix from Final Fantasy IX has long been a dream costume of mine, as has Queen Remedi from Final Fantasy Tactics Advance.
What has been your most memorable cosplay experience?
[Paraphrased from my interview on DoubleStitch.co.nz - http://www.doublestitch.co.nz/wordpress/?p=245 ] I remember our walking race to the con at NZAE on the morning of the competition, and everyone was in costume and we were all finished and we looked awesome and we still hadnít practised our skit yet, and it was so ridiculously difficult to move quickly in a kimono and we were running late Ė and I was just giggling the whole way! Thereís something that I find so exhilarating in getting the job done well, being able to show it off and have people show their appreciation of my work by asking for photos or commenting on the costume. Itís not the validation from other people that makes me so happy (though itís certainly nice! ;D) Ė when I see the costume on me, DONE, suddenly it doesnít matter that Iíve had so little sleep/have been stressed/have two assignments due on Tuesday. :D
Do you participate in masquerades?
I do! (Assuming we're talking Masquerades = Cosplay Competitions)
What was your best masquerade experience?
The deafening burst of applause from the audience after we finished our Final Fantasy 4 skit (see it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9AexMf58RTA ) at Auckland Armageddon - it was just so heart warming (...and then when they announced our two prizes, I cried. I'm such a sook, lol).
Have you won any awards for your costumes?
I have indeed! Auckland Armageddon 2007 - Top Ten for my Summoner Yuna (FFX) Wellington Armageddon 2009 - Best Group with Clan Biscuit (myself as Rosso the Crimson, Aurellion as Yuffie Kisaragi, and Valska as Shalua Rui, all from FF7: Dirge of Cerberus) Auckland Armageddon 2009 - Best Group and Best Skit with Clan Biscuit (myself as Rosa, Aurellion as Rydia, Sowilo as Edge, all from FF4) New Zealand Anime Event 2010: Best in Show with Nineteen Inch Biscuits (myself as Maru, PuppyAura as Moro, Seraphik as Himawari, Nox as Watanuki, Creature124 as Domeki and Midsummer-Snow as Zashiki Warashi, all from xxxHolic)
